Absolute scum.

It's not even as though it's a third world nation struggling for food. There is no need for it. Just horrendous cruelty. How they can bring themselves to do it completely beyond me.

Why can't Denmark just say that's enough and ban it?

I think it's terrible when these inhuman acts carry on just because it's 'tradition'

There was a tv programme on this last year. It centered on Greenpeace and their efforts to thwart it.
They were unsuccessful and the same scenes that are portrayed here were shown.
It is appalling yet the islanders defend it as a part of their culture. In fact they don't just defend it, they celebrate it.
A horrible nation of bloodthirsty scumbags.

Nothing wrong with harvesting a natural sustainable  resource ,nothing at all ,been watching too much Disney .

The Faroes and the seas around the islands teem with a rich and abundant array of fish and  wildlife. The Faroese strive to manage this wealth of resources as sustainably as possible

Many species of whales frequent the waters around the Faroes. Of these, the pilot whale is the best known and best studied. The total population is approximately 778,000 whales. Of these, the Faroese catch on average around 800 a year.

The Faroese have survived on fish for centuries. The fishing industry started to grow exponentially in the 19th century, and is today the primary industry in the Faroes.

Salmon farming began to develop in the 1980s. Today, Faroese salmon farming accounts for 40 % of the total value of Faroese exports.

Agriculture in the Faroe Islands does not play as important a commercial role as fisheries and fish farming. But many farms produce meat and dairy products for the local market, and the Faroe Islands are self-sufficient in milk production.

Birdlife is rich in the islands, and the Faroese have eaten seabirds and gathered their eggs for as long as they have kept sheep. Today, puffins and fulmars are eaten, while other species are protected for conservation reasons.

To call the Nordics barbaric or bloodthirsty is completely absurd ,far better to harvest a sustainable natural resource than use polluting and environmentally damaging intensive farming .

Too many soft lads around .

UK needs to think about a seal cull soon .

You ever witnessed it.
The whales are driven inshore by an armada of small boats where the locals wait for them.
Death is not swift as the favoured method is to hook them in their blowholes and drag them ashore.
But you are right I shouldn't label then scumbags. They are c*nts. Wink

If we stopped fishing  and replaced it with intensively farmed GM fish we would further destroy the ecosystem and biology of the sea.GM genes polluting and weakening what nature intended ,the ratio of fish species  in fish  pellets to fish produced is unsustainable ,for example farmed salmon its about 5:1.Not to mention the dangerous and toxic  chemicals involved in parasite control or the increased disease risks to wild stocks  . Better to use sustainable harvesting  of the wild stock ,much better and much more sensible .
Hunters/fishers  know more about the natural balance and do more for the creatures they harvest than any amount that your type ever will .You may be well intentioned but your lack of knowledge on the subjects you constantly  campaign about suggest to me you have an agenda  .When you the bird killing cat owner are called before the moral prosecutor i suspect you will flounder badly.
I have a clear conscious ,the people  best interested in protecting fish and many many other of natures wild harvest is the hunters ,over a course of time seasons have been established and practices adjusted ,this sort of thread is just a straight forward attack on anyone who fishes hunts or shoots or eats any of the fruits mother nature provides .
Things like killing sharks for their fins ,or rhinos for horn ,tigers for medicine ,the ivory trade and many more are noble causes but just because you percieve killing a large mammal as cruel is no justification for meddling in a nations  culture let alone attempting to label them barbaric .Of course its the UK anything furry or cute (seals a great example) and its all emotion and snot over common sense .   Its a typical lefty type of attack ,sweeping unfounded  generalizations.
Indigenous peoples rights are just as important imo ,they have a right to their culture just like you have to yours .
A whale being killed to them is no diff to a cow being slaughtered to us ,of that i am sure ,labeling them barbaric is just stupid.
Putting certain animals on a pedestal and trying to give them some sort of high position in the animal kingdom is absurd .
Nature knows nothing about compassion ,you will never see it apart from family ties ,outwith that it is survival of the fittest.
Yes we need to look after every living thing and show respect but hunting is an ancient instinct and one we all have a right to ,its in our blood ,man was not created to sit on a computer ,gamble ,drink smoke ,talk sh1te and argue about a load of bollocks .
believe it or not he is a hunter gatherer and will be for another few thousand million years yet .
I dont feel comfortable with the idea we can create a sterile world where all the food can be prodcued by artificial means ,we need to protect the right to hunt for food .There is an agenda to control and destroy natural resources and replace them with cheap imitations
its a world that will be full of pain and hurt ,all that fish that goes into yor kitty did not grow on a tree ,it was removed from some far off ecosystem ,depriving some big fish of a meal ,yor a hypocrite and frankly am not going to be giving you a reasonable answer again ,next time you call me name a will respond in kind .

I've ate whale meat in Bergen, Norway. an I've a friend on Facebook from Faroe Islands and the Islanders feel strongly on this.

My own opinion is whale hunting is not sustainable and something we can't farm. The Faroe Islanders, Norwegians, Japanese will kill their own trade when they over hunt.

The whole fishing trade is killing itself tbh.

I'm not with BreadandButter though and think farming is the way forward. GM is a different subject, something I'm still undecided.

BreadnButter brings up some good points whether you agree with him or not.

I always chuckle when i see and read a thread like this, it takes some graphic pictures for lefties to actually realise that some food is killed.

No doubt most of the above posters are vegan, when they are finished with there detest with meat survival they will move onto how innocent vegetables are brutally uprooted by force.

Things like killing sharks for their fins ,or rhinos for horn ,tigers for medicine ,the ivory trade and many more are noble causes

Something wrong with you if you think that.

The Faroe sc*m don't need to kill all these whales....

The whales are highly intelligent....same as rounding up 250 chimpanzees and murdering them.....pathetic and evil !

Is there any difference catching fish in a net and letting them slowly suffocate out of the sea? I'm against animal cruelty but do we really know the full story of the Foroe Islanders?

Whales and other fish types are being hunted out of existance. Faroe Islanders depend on the fish trade to survive, they will be the ones who suffer in the end.

This seems to be a comprehensive and objective description of the subject.

i obviously meant noble cause as in  the opposition to the  killing of these endangered species   .....ffs Sad

If you take away the ability to hunt/fish a sustainable resource Ovalmen , and then replace it with Farmed Fish  there are environmental concerns ,end of ,i am not advocating whale farming BTW Silly.Currently fish farming is done in open sea cages and you only need to do an internet search  to see the various issues ,disease ,pollution  and wild fish gene pool being polluted are  just a few .

Current fish farming in the sea is very profitable due to lack of regulations ,its the environment that is paying for it .
Far more sensible to manage and harvest wild fish correctly  as we do with most sea stock  ,current fish stocks are considered to be in reasonably  good shape ,quotas do work ,the technology is there to monitor and attempt to control and manage our vital resources  ,to say that all fishing is  not sustainable is totally incorrect ,its a case of making sure certain species are not over fished

We have been  guilty of removing key food species from the oceans ,like sand eels and using them for all sorts of stupid things from fertilizer to burning them in power stations .Currently all sorts of key food lower down the chain is removed and turned into fish pellets for farmed salmon. Some of the oceans that are robbed are on the other side of the world ,turning it into salmon at a ration of 5:1 is unsustainable and we are upsetting

At the level the Faroes are harvesting whales at it is  sustainable ,whaling for oil was very damaging but the whales have recovered very well .

The hunting of whales should not be stopped on emotional grounds ,whales today and tomorrow its sardines ,as mentioned then its Brussel Sprouts .
