I don't see a problem at all.  He's The Speaker of The House, a very prestigious position in our society, hardly appropriate for him to be travelling around on public transport.

And there are that many loony lefties roaming our streets that they aren't safe.

That's another valid point, Akabula.  The Speaker is one of Britain's most senior parliamentarians and, as such, his security is an obvious issue.  To whinge about a few hundred quid spent on a chauffeur driven car is as short-sighted as it is petty.

In fact, in terms of British precedence, John Bercow ranks above all non-royals except David Cameron and Michael Gove, the Lord Chancellor.  In light of this fact it's ridiculous for anyone to expect him to travel on the cheap during his official duties, or otherwise for my money.

The security issue is a red herring - unless he has a bodyguard with him, a chauffeur-driven car is no safer than a black cab; this is more about his vanity and sense of self-importance, which unfortunately some people seem to fall for.

How much does it actually cost though? Maybe the quoted figures are right but surely either the chauffeur-driven car was a posh minicab, or the car and chauffeur were getting paid anyway whether or not Bercow used them?

Probably either a government pool car/driver, or a car/driver that is permanently assigned to the Speaker, and this is a purely notional amount.

Where I work there is a permanent driver for chauffering the top brass around. You could say this makes for some very expensive trips but aside from petrol, the actual cost will not change whether he is sitting in the canteen or driving the MD to a meeting.

On safety, some government cars will be armoured. Whether this extends to the Speaker, who knows?

If I had spent the last six years making as many enemies as Bercow has, I'd insist on an armoured car just for a trip to the khazi.

I'd rather taxes went towards Bercow's luxury car journey, than a lover of Islam, like Choudhary, whio hates the UK, on benefits.

All this furore over a chauffeur-driven car amazes me. 

This ain't some local councillor popping out for an afternoon's jolly on the taxpayer's ticket here, we're talking about one of the country's most important and high profile personages.  John Bercow the man might well be an annoying individual to many, but for the Speaker of the House to travel around on the cheap would be a national embarrassment and a totally unrealistic expectation.
