Fredrick "Fred" Else (31 March 1933 – 20 July 2015) was an English footballer, who played as a goalkeeper. Else gained over 600 professional appearances in his career playing for just three clubs, Preston North End, Blackburn Rovers and Barrow. After playing he settled in Barrow-in-Furness, where he remains a popular figure.

looks like Mike England top left, Fred Pickering top right, and is that Roy Vernon standing next to Fred Else?
|
|
By:
not sure, does look like Mike. Bottom left Bryan Douglas, bottom centre Ronnie Clayton.

It was widely reckoned that Else was the best goalie never to play for England.

By:
Else played in the first game I ever saw, at St Andrews in 1965.

Is that Keith Newton, third from the right in the back row?

Sad news about Fred. I'm sure he was one of many on the T y-phoo tea cards I collected.
Lovely to see dear old Mike England, back left, before his transfer to Spurs and cataclysmic tussles with the great Peter Osgood when Spurs played Chelsea. |

Yes, the TV cards were great in Typhoo Tea, which for years was always priced at 1/9 if I remember correctly.
Looks like Keith, raspberry. Good spot. |

Is that Keith Newton, third from the right in the back row? Yes I think it is Keith Newton... thought it was Roy Vernon but according to wiki Else and Vernon missed each other at Blackburn by a year. |

Newton was a terrific player, great tackler, good in the air and brilliant at interceptions. I'd forgotten he sadly died almost 20 years ago.

Here he is setting up 2 goals against Germany in 1970 in the World Cup.
We'd have won that if the great Banks had been in goal. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ps3JBN1vAe0 |

Kenny - did you see that Kevin Hector was a guest at Bradford Park Avenue last night?

Hi Muntz, yes I noticed it in the local paper a few days ago.
What a striker he was for Avenue, and proved he could adapt at the top level with Derby. I saw him many times. |

Good to see some references to the late and great Keith Newton.
If I'm not mistaken, he can be spotted in the middle of the scene if you were to freeze frame Banks' legendary save from Pele in 1970. Others include Alan Mullery (casually ruffled Banks' hair moments after the save), Bobby Moore (applauding in utter disbelief) and dear old Terry Cooper (left for dead by Jairzinho) on the wing. And of course Pele ..... GOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL - oh **** :-) |
