I think four years is about right.

On the one hand he may have tried to get sent to the Russian Front. On the other, he would have had to volunteer for the SS and also he syphoned off stolen cash into his own pocket.

He's an ex-SS man who's lived a good life, not some Arthur Daley-esque loveable rogue.

I'm sure he'll be treated well in prison.

Never showed remorse & unrepentant in an interview when 85 years old.

Go to Auschwitz & see the room full of womens hair or the room filled with boots & glasses.
Then go to the room where all the money was taken off the Jews by this man before they were gassed, oh there is no room full of  money that would have disappeared instantly but because there is none & he only took & counted there money, lets show some compassion Crazy

Lack of evidence could be an issue.

I think this bloke was arrested some time ago but released due to lack of evidence.

seems strange after all this time ....... there must have been many more who should have been prosecuted

I have a niece who married a German, family lived 60 miles from Munich .....

his father was in the Hitler Youth , mother's father fought on the Russian front  ... I met them both around the time of the wedding ... not an occasion to ask too many questions .... the mother who spoke a little English instigated a meal with ' .. let's agree war is wrong .. '

I acquiesced though I really wanted to say, like Basil Fawlty, 'YOU STARTED IT !'

years ago all the attention on catching German war criminals centred on 'big name Nazis' who were believed to have escaped justice such as Josef Mengele who had conducted genetic research on human subjects. His subsequent experiments, focusing primarily on twins, had no regard for the health or safety of the victims. Mengele was also a member of the team of doctors assigned to do "selections": new arrivals deemed able to work were admitted into the camp, and those deemed unfit for labour were immediately killed in the gas chambers. Mengele left Auschwitz on 17 January 1945, shortly before the arrival of the liberating Red Army troops.

Assisted by a network of former SS members, Mengele sailed to Argentina in July 1949. He initially lived in and around Buenos Aires, then fled to Paraguay in 1959 and Brazil in 1960 while being sought by West Germany, Israel, and Nazi hunters such as Simon Wiesenthal so that he could be brought to trial. In spite of extradition requests by the West German government and clandestine operations by Mossad (the Israeli intelligence agency), Mengele eluded capture. He drowned while swimming off the Brazilian coast in 1979 and was buried under a false name. His remains were disinterred and positively identified by forensic examination in 1985.

I wonder at his trial not that I think he shouldn't have been tried ...... more that why weren't others including camp officers not tried ?

As I said, cc, these people have to be identified and if there is sufficient evidence, prosecuted.

It was pretty much cumpulsory to be in the Hitler Youth and the German Army. Membership of the SS was voluntary and for fanatical nazis.

As I understand it, there was a policy adopted by the Americans and British shortly after the war whereby these people weren't pursued with as much vigouras they might have been.

This was in an effort to minimise alienation of the Germans as we needed their cooperation in the face of the new potential threat from the Soviet Union.

Some of these soldiers would have been intimidated by the ferocity of the SS.
I don't think he should have been jailed or even brought to trial for that matter.

True, except he wasn't one of "these soldiers". He was in the SS.

loads of "brave" crusaders for justice coming out of the woodwork to go after a 93 year old clerk 70 years too late. i suppose for many it beats having to stand up to actual present day genocidal terrorist regimes and their many supporters and killer who walk free and continue to kill and oppress.
in truth, if given the chance in 1939, many probably would have defended the nationalist socialist workers party against the racist and imperial allies.

Cardiff - it may be irrelevant in the context of the verdict but it is very much relevant when having been found guilty, considering his sentence.

Irrespective of whether he was in the SS or not he could still have felt intimidated with the barbarity of what he witnessed.

So direct descendants of Magda Goebbels are amongst the richest people in Germany and Europe. How has this been allowed to happen?

I have been to Austwitz and also to the Sophie Scholl memorial in Munich so I have seen the best and worst of Germany at that time in their history. The sheer industrial size scale of the Austwitz killing machine shocks you but its a little glass case in the centre of a room filled with the few small possessions of a child which reduces you to tears.

The state of Israel had the right to go after the main Nazi figures who escaped justice after the war. Now it should be up to Germany alone to decide how it wishes to deal with this part of their history and I think they have been very good in facing up to it in the years since.

Without the full facts its hard to give a personal opinion.

A little unrelated but some of the newspapers in Germany were outraged last week by the way their country had treated Greece, some saying their leaders attempts to humiliate Greece had undone in 10 minutes the goodwill that Germany had strived to create since the war. I think the events of the second world war is one which Germany will never let itself get away from in many of their citizens minds and its a subject talked a lot about in their schools.

good to hear some in germany recognise their current actions.
they should always remember the way they acted back then and take it into consideration in current and future dealings with other countries.
