To cut a very long story short I haven't been paid a washer of benefits for almost 20 months due to dwp finding numerous deposits of winnings from betfair in my bank statements. This year I've done very little betting on here but I've still managed to rack up almost 5k in winnings showing up on my statements, eg 200 here, 350 there etc etc. Now I've totalled my losses for the same period, eg transactions from my bank into betfair AND THEY EXCEED MY WINNINGS. Low and behold dwp conveniently ignore my losses and treat me as having earned over 5k thus far this year. What planet are these clowns on, had I gone into a high st bookies as opposed to online with say a few hundred and managed to punt for a few months without losing my initial few hundred and emerged skint they would treat all my winning bets as income and ignore my losing bets. At the height of my gambling on here they sent me a letter saying I was earning almost 3k per week as they found 611k spread over 4 years on my statements whilst ignoring money going in the opposite direction. They treated me as a pro gambler, which the world would be full of if you ignored losing bets. Please no "GET A JOG REPLIES PLEASE" just valid opinions.

Job
Report maleuk01. • July 13, 2015 12:02 AM BST
why don't you get a job?

no benefits in 20 months? what have you lived on? and how long before have you been getting benefits before that?

and you can have a jog anytime you want with or without a job, so don't see what the issue is there.
Report akabula • July 13, 2015 12:06 AM BST
How long have you been unemployed
Obviously a lot more than 20 months.
Sorry no sympathy I'm with the DWP on this.
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 12:09 AM BST
Savings. The point i'm making is why are they ignoring my losing bets to reach this conclusion? I don't want any advice on getting a job thanks.
Report akabula • July 13, 2015 12:13 AM BST
Well if you post on here stuff like this then you're gonna get it. Laugh
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:16 AM BST
Losing don't count. I am sure if you have over 5-6 k in money in any banks your not eligible for benefits.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:16 AM BST
Wind up post. Anyone should know this.
Report maleuk01. • July 13, 2015 12:19 AM BST
but don't you have a limit on savings you can have before getting jobseekers?

and if so then if you had enough savings to live on for 20 months then surely you where not eligible for jsa so why did you get jobseekers in the first place?

though im no expert in this field. It seems like you don't want a job and you just fancy getting some free money?
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 12:21 AM BST
Typical Teddy Bear reply, maybe you're just pissed off that King Dave isn't as flush as you first thought judging by your signings. Quite simple really I only asked why losing bets are ignored.
Report akabula • July 13, 2015 12:23 AM BST
Laugh What the feck has that to with it ya lazy bugger. Get a joab.
Report maleuk01. • July 13, 2015 12:25 AM BST
but you don't answer other people's questions. It could be that you have enough savings that your not entitled rather than the gambling issue.

Also if you got benefits before that how long was that for? maybe you got them in error?
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 12:26 AM BST
Read the question I asked. JOAB?????
Report GLASGOWCALLING • July 13, 2015 12:30 AM BST
i dont think its the betfair acc alone, have you just not been paid because you had too much in your bank/s acc. ??
Report spellingandgrammarchecker • July 13, 2015 12:34 AM BST
If you have £16k in total in different bank accounts, you're not entitled to JSA.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:35 AM BST
betting has nothing to do with it. Your only allowed so much in savings to be eligible for most benefits.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:36 AM BST
I thought the figure was a lot lower than 16k. Thought it was around 5k.
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 12:37 AM BST
I've been told that I've had just over 5k into my bank a/c this year from betfair which they're treating as income, my argument is why have they ignored the 5k plus that went in the opposite direction? Another thing is that I quite often transfer monies from betfair into my bank for safe keeping before transferring it back again, little did I know they treat that as income also. They've told me they are treating me as a professional gambler, which the world would be full of if they ignore your losers eg monies from my bank into betfair.
Report spellingandgrammarchecker • July 13, 2015 12:49 AM BST
Get a job and save all the hassle.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:52 AM BST
No such thing as being treated as a professional gambler. Your just not eligible because you have savings. I doubt they could class it as income.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:55 AM BST
And they never told you that you were being treated as a professional gambler! Betting winnings is none of their business or the tax peoples business either. Its just because you have savings over a certain amount.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:58 AM BST
I know because if I borrow someones name to use a different betting account and they are on benefits I make sure there is never over a certain amount in their bank account at any one time. You could win 10k over a  period and that would be okay but you cant have over 5k ( I think ) showing up as available as savings at any one time.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 12:59 AM BST
And I don't believe a word of this thread because you would surely know these things.
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 1:05 AM BST
Betting winnings is none of their business? Try showing them your bank statements showing a regular amount of income from betfair despite your total being within their 6k limits and see how they treat you. I know what they've told me and treated me as such, that's the jist of my argument, they're ignoring my losing bets.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 1:10 AM BST
Might be some of their business if you wanted a mortgage. But I would personally love a bank to try and pull me up about where money is coming into my account. The obvious answer would be at least I am gambling with my own money.

But getting back to the point. Betting is a non issue here. Its just the amount of money deemed as savings you have in your account re benefit eligibility.
Report paddletoe • July 13, 2015 1:11 AM BST
If they can only find under a certain amount of cash in your bank accounts at any one time you should be eligible for benefits.
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 1:16 AM BST
Not true, if u had a regular income into your a/c from gambling but only kept a few hundred in it they will come after you. In my case I wasn't even in front this year, but as they ignored my monies going from my bank into betfair, is was inevitable i'd be showing a profit if they adopt this criteria for judging your profit and loss.

All depends - if you won 50k over a year and it all went through and was taken out of your bank account but only a few k was ever in your account at any one time they would be asking you to explain where the other money went to that you had withdrawn.

I only know this as I have used some betting accounts from people on benefits out of dozens I have used so I know how much I can get away with putting through their account without getting them in any trouble.

Its nothing to do with gambling being treated as regular winnings or that you have been told you are a professional gambler which I don't believe in the first place.

Report TheBaron • July 13, 2015 10:28 AM BST
They probably look at it that the money coming in is income and the money going out is you blowing your money gambling.  The way things are I'd be very surprised if you get the result you're looking for. And as you've seen you'll get very little sympathy so you're a soft target.
Report Kelly Brook • July 13, 2015 11:36 AM BST
Money generated from gambling is legally considered Capital not income. So providing you dont exceed the savings threshold your gambling is a total irrelevance. I'm sure somebody with a similar username  started an identical thread to this a couple of years back?

....failing all that, say you have a chronic gambling habit and you should be on the sick.
Report cooperman12 • July 13, 2015 12:37 PM BST
That was me. In response to your post I've been told I must show a years bank statements clean of any income from betfair. If they continue with their criteria of ignoring my losses eg monies going in the opposite direction from my bank into betfair, then every punter in the country would be deemed a pro punter. My argument is are they taking every punter in the high st bookies, treating his winning bets as income whilst ignoring his losers, this is what they are doing to me with my transactions on here. As for your point about not exceeding the savings threshold, this is not true if they can prove you are consistently making money from gambling, then they would be within their rights to withhold payment, but if they ignore your losing bets everybody would be making a regular income.

savings fo 6k to 16k reduce benefits on a sliding scale.

i think the fairest way is this.
introduce tax on profits from gambling.

you get a 2k allowance and anything over that is taxed at 20%.
you can carry forward losses from the previous year..

condition being that any firm can not deny the government tax by restricting or barring punters......

also any tax counts towards national insurance for state pension purposes....obviously you have to have paid enough tax mind.

You already paid betfair 5% in commissions...tell the authorites to get the tax from that!
