You're a sparky aren't you? If you were doing a private job for a customer and you had to go and pick some materials up locally then you wouldn't charge them anything. If you had to travel a fair distance for something that they wanted then you'd have to talk to them about covering your time and diesel/petrol.
If you were subbing to someone and they wanted you to work a long way from home then I'd suggest talking to them too. If I ever have to travel further than I want to go (and I'm on day work) then I make sure I finish early and get paid for a full day.

So you wouldn't expect the customer to pay any mileage if the job was 80 miles away? Finishing early could open up another problem imo.
I know about the 45p/25p thing but are you saying your travel costs are included in your day rate?

I know that various trades work differently, but I try to include mileage etc into the hourly/day rate. I find that most employers aren't interested in add ons and just want the bottom line figure.

Question remains though how much of your hourly rate is allowed for travel expenses. I guess if you are always local it doesn't really matter.

well fact reamins HRMC allow you 45p for first 10,000 miles and then 25p for anything over so its well worth charging nothing and cliaming tax back on the rates i mentioned.
