when was the meaning of the word average changed?
i must has missed that meeting.
as far as i know the definition is along the lines of in the middle or the mean of things.
now it seems it has become some sort of slur.
how strange as being average is surely neither a compliment or a slur it's just average.

If the generality of things are good then average could be a compliment.

In certain circumstances below average could be good.

In certain things, such as the weather, it could be best.

And it depends on context, if you say someone is an average guy it paints a good picture.

Average

late 15c., "financial loss incurred through damage to goods in transit," from French avarie "damage to ship," and Italian avaria; a word from 12c. Mediterranean maritime trade (compare Spanish averia; other Germanic forms, Dutch avarij, German haferei, etc., also are from Romanic languages), which is of uncertain origin. Sometimes traced to Arabic 'arwariya "damaged merchandise." Meaning shifted to "equal sharing of such loss by the interested parties." Transferred sense of "statement of a medial estimate" is first recorded 1735. The mathematical extension is from 1755.

A youngster killed in a tragic accident could/would never be described
as average even if it was the case.

A class of 5 year olds were asked by their teacher to give examples of animals. Little Mary put up her hand and said: " A dog, Miss. We have a dog at home." " Very good, Mary", said the teacher, "Any more examples?" Peter put up his hand: " A horse, Miss. I see a horse every morning on my way to school." "Excellent." said the teacher. "Anybody else?" Little Johnny put up his hand "An average, Miss". "An average? said the teacher. "I've never heard of that animal. What do you know about it, Johnny?". "Well Miss, Dad's best friend was over last evening and Dad was telling him he gets a ride on an average once a week."

No young black or asian person that commits a crime, or gets stabbed to death, is an average student.
