My perception whether its true or not is that they have a certain level of being calm under pressure which is better than other European countries- noticeable in sports and even poker.

Something I always wondered about and only bring it up today as I know someone moving to Stokholm to take up a new job and apparently drinking alcohol in Sweden is very rare with only a small number of off licenses. Probably unrelated and a total pointless post in general.

They have government run alcohol shops, very odd imo , not many of these "shops" either and very expensive , high rate of suicide and alcoholism brushed under the cool carpet imo

As I said it has just always been my perception that Swedish people had strong personality and it was not based on much other than some examples above. So possibly totally wrong.
Surprised though about the alcohol shops and their extremely small number.

Very low levels of rape in Sweden too
Report Coachbuster July 1, 2015 12:12 AM BST
they do seem quite a civilised lot up that way -but then Sweden has a fairer social system  so maybe folk feel they fit in more with society rather than the obvious wealth divide  here in the UK ,not to mention the south /north divide .

quality seems to ride about qauntity too - don't see many fat swedes  Laugh

If Sweden is anything like Norway, pisshead chit chatters should steer clear.

The legal driving limit is 0.2%.

You can't even have half a pint before you start to drive.

I am in favour of a zero tolerance in some things. No ifs and buts, you know where you stand.

For historical perspective get the Sjowall and Wahloo Martin Beck mysteries (10, last about 1975).  They were supposed to be a pair of extreme left-wing Swedish journalists stirring **** but now they read like a fair and balanced warning of what was to come, society-wise.  Classic crime fiction.  Think she's still alive.  They were the original Scandanavian Noir.

You know you can trust me.

They used to be into eugenics.
Maybe that's why they are so intelligent.

@Wildman - I think the incidence of rape is still very low, if you're a bloke.
Report paddletoe July 1, 2015 1:44 AM BST
Very good point raised by Wildman which I had to check and it does seem factually correct which is shocking. Some people do however claim there might be other reasons behind Swedens rape figures such as their prostition laws and more rapes being reported.

isn't Malmo Swedens cesspit ?  rest of the country is fine i think ,Malmo has had its probs over the years ,riots etc

One of the great misconceptions about Sewden is that it is very expensive but that is only in Stockholm where prices are astronomical. Elsewhere prices are quite similar to the UK.
You can buy beers and lagers up to about 3.5% from supermarkets but other alcohol must be bought from the govt. shop where again prices are similar to the UK.
Like most of Northern Europe most local journeys are by bike and one of the great features of the country is the lack of motor vehicles on the roads and motorways. Very small population, lots of space and much warmers summers than UK but of course the winters are colder and longer. Propery prices away from capital are much lower than UK. A relative of mine just bought a large 5 bedroom house with basement sauna and gym for £125,000.
The Swedes generally are very laid back and not materialistic at all. No-one bothers about where you work or what car you drive. The Swedish royal family can be seen on bikes.
Great place for a holiday if you like to chill out and like forests and lakes. Flights are cheap and quick from UK and virtually everyone speaks English.
Report macarony July 1, 2015 9:27 AM BST
I can remember reading somewhere that in some northern Scandinavian countries, like Sweden that had high alcohol prices, people tended to brew their own hooch.
Instances of alcoholism and liver dieses, was much higher than you would expect.
