Aye, you can't beat statistics. It has been recorded that some families in Bradford are 100% Asian! At this rate, it'll soon be 150% in some families.

You don't see many top coloured swimmers either and I doubt we will ever see a white person win gold at the 100 metre dash.

I could give an even greater percentile outbalance of sporting attendance but you would not need to too many posts to understand the reasons why and to claim it was wrong. In n.ireland where about 53% of the polulation are British the percentage of people who attend gaelic football matches would probably be around 99% catholic.

It would be a pointless argument to claim this imbalance was worthy of too much debate.

Check out the million or so people on "The Mall", for HRH's "Golden", and then "Diamond Jubilee" where finding a none white is like "Where's Wally"!

Not sure what the relevance between celebrations of monarchy and a sporting event. But even following there was a relevence lots of people in Britain would be against monarchy and that percentage would vary in different regions and not unreasonable to follow it would also vary depending on ethnicity.

There are also certain barriers to entry due to social factors in sports such an tennis and golf to give just two examples. Which mean people of colour who would be less well off have not the same access to the facilities and also coaching needed in those sports. I think that argument still stands despite Tiger Woods and Serena Williams who had a dominant parental figure some people might say chose a sport for them they wanted them in excel in before they were even born!

class is an old excuse , Tennis courts a plenty - probably easier to become proficient at tennis than Soccer as you only need a single opponent at all times

I beg to differ in terms of reaching the highest levels in sports like tennis and golf. You need access to facilities and one to one coaching. There are probably many many children who could become top golfers and tennis players but they have never picked up a racket or club to begin with and also you normally need parental drive/help in those two technical sports.

Nearly every child kicks a ball and talent is easily spotted and you don't need professional coaches from an early age or the money to pay for them. Few Maradonnas slip through the net but then again there is a kind of inverted class element to a sport like soccer which is why nearly all the great footballers in history were brought up in cities. Farmers sons don't play soccer as much!

I am not saying sports like golf or tennis are elitist - just there are certain barriers to entry and progress and money helps unless your a Seve Ballesteros and lived next to a golf course.

Tennis is seen as a fairly geeky sport in Britain. When you see posh tw@ts like Castle and Henman dribbling nonsense on the TV it's not going to be attractive to the youth. Now you've got Clare Balding presenting which will switch off viewers in their droves.

We had 4 tennis courts in my old school and in 7 years I attended there was literally not a single game of tennis played to my knowledge.

Come to think of it there might have been as many as 6 or 8 tennis courts there.

This thread is nonsense like most the others on chit chat forum. There is loads of non whites in the top 20 in atp and wta and it's only in Britain where it's seen as uncool to be a tennis fan.

I am also fairly certain my school PE department did not have a single tennis racket for all these tennis courts during my time there.

Obviously easier to reach a decent pro level in tennis in countries where the climate is better or where there is more of a tradition of a certain sport.

yomamma is correct so far as the UK goes = the game does have a slight image problem in working class towns ,case here in Ipswich which is a very 'alpha male ' working class town  and tennis would be frowned upon , i will play  occasionally but tend to find no other male English players over the courts ,always Lithuanian,Poles etc

paddle ,you need decent weather - but obviously Germany ,Sweden,France,Switzerland,Croatia   have produced top players -not just Spain and USA

The tradition of a country or ethnic group within a country also must surely play a part. You don't see many coloured British snooker players either.

snooker has had a rapid decline in popularity of late in britain. rory mcleod is one black british snooker player. interestingly it's taken off in asia.

Just thinking about it but this thread is actually bizarre. There's not many British tennis players full stop. Andy Murray is a bit of a freak in that respect. There isn't another British male player worthy of the name. Aljaz Bedene is British number 2 and he recently changed nationality from Slovenia.

The British Women's number 1 is Heather Watson and she is mixed race. Laura Robson is 2nd best and she was born in Australia.

As for the crowd it seems mostly made up of middle class folk.

When I worked on Canary Wharf, one of the office cleaners had a son who played tennis at school.

He was 12 years old, and from what we heard he was pretty good. Not many played against him at school, but those who did were beaten quite easily.

Somebody said to ask the management if they would sponsor him by paying for his coaching.

They turned him down without ever seeing him play.

So are we all agreed then its extremely difficult in sports such as golf and golf to become a top professional even if you have shown an early talent in those games, a talent for which most children don't even have the opportunity to find out if they have it or not in the first place.

Which is why I maintain many of these top golfers and tennis players achievements in the world of sport needs to be put in context that they come from a small pool of players with the same opportunities as they did and the money they earn is a reflection of the kind of sponsorships these sports can win from big companies selling products to the better offs in society who were no good at other sports so took up tennis and golf when they had a few bob in their pockets.

You could not help make a great footballer where you need to be born with a natural talent in the same way you could help make a Serena Williams or Tiger Woods. It just could not happen even if you had an unlimited amount of both money and time as a parent.
