The European Union is spending £110 million per year to support farmers who rear bulls for bullfights. The EU has also renovated bullrings and is being urged by the Spanish government to recognise bullfighting as representative of Europe's cultural heritage. A bullfighting arena in Spain"The organisers of bullfights in Spain have told me that they love the EU because they now receive enough subsidies to kill 15 or 16 animals in a fiesta rather than the traditional one or two", says Tony Moore of Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe, according to an article by the Daily Mail's Danny Penman. Moore adds, "The EU is supporting the torturing to death of bulls in the bullring and countless other animals in village 'blood fiestas'. I find it absolutely disgusting that a proportion of my tax goes to support animal abuse. It makes a mockery of the EU's own animal welfare laws and it has to stop". Bullfighting is a cruel blood sport that should have been relegated to the history books a long time ago. No matter what its history is, bullfighting consists of the torture, mutilation and slaughter of animals for entertainment. Please write to EU Commissioner Phil Hogan today and ask to put a halt to subsidies for this blood sport. I think bull fighting is very sad but I don't expect the cows who died in slaughter houses enjoyed their end, heres some facts I dredged up from U S
According to a 2013 report from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 6.6 million cows were commercially slaughtered in the U.S. in 2012, which results in an average of 18,032 cows killed each day. Including steers and heifers, a total of 32.95 million cattle were commercially slaughtered, which averages to 90,027 killed each day |

I have no problem with animals being bred and reared for meat, as long as they are well cared for and are slaughtered humanely and with dignity.
Choose your meat carefully. |

yorky It's a price thing mainly. The US are big beef eaters, steak for breakfast is not unusual as it is cheap. Their consumption of lamb is very small, and it is mainly imported from NZ which bumps the price up. The cattle barons have always had the muscle above the sheep farmer.

I think we should leave this to the Spanish people to decide what is acceptable as cruelty in their country.
We have enough problems here with young women and kids being abused and we have done nothing about it for fear ofd being called racists. |

wouldn't give PETA the steam of my pi$$.
Bunch of loonies, and weirdo's. Want to ban horse racing, greyhound racing, fishing, meat eating or dairy eating, zoo's etc. I therefore presume they are also against the use of working dogs whether it be for use as sniffer dogs or guide dogs as they are against the use of animals in anything. They need to watch a few more wildlife programmes if they want to see animals being torn to shreds. The wild for animals isn't all its cracked up to be. |

I think we should leave this to the Spanish people to decide what is acceptable as cruelty in their country I don't think there is anything to be decided. Running animals through town streets tormenting them on the way then tormenting them further in the bullring by sticking swords into them until they are exhausted then the final act where they are put to death is surely cruelty. TMM anybody finding this entertaining is sad beyond words. |

BTW this is also the country that allowed up til about 10 years ago a Donkey to be thrown from a bell tower to it's death in the name of religion.

this issue has nothing to do with religion
These campaigns are driven and funded by pseudo animal rights politically driven agendas . The bulls are kept well and provide income and jobs ,they are fairly wild and many people are killed and injured ,its not one way traffic . it may not be acceptable to some but in Spain its deeply ingrained in their culture and best left to them to decide ,they would not dream of trying to interfere in anything in this country ,we should not enforce our misguided morals on them ,let them have their bull run and bull fights ,until you actually go and see a fight or the run and speak to people in Spain its unfair to make knee jerk reactions because the tree hugg Leave the bull fighting to the Spanish to decide ,its none of our business ,interfering bissy bodies should keep their noses out imvho |

We all have our own opinions BnB and yours is worth no less or no more than anyone else's.
BTW I didn't say bull fighting had anything to do with religion but the throwing of the Donkey from the bell tower does. |

I'm against animal cruelty. I've rescued 2 springer spaniels that would've otherwise have been put down. I just think it's not our business to interfere in their culture.

Here is how Malta dealt with the controversial issue of spring shooting
http://www.euractiv.com/sections/climate-environment/referendum-puts-end-maltese-bird-hunting-tradition-313715 yea ,they held a referendum ,a much more responsible way for a democracy to decide on such an issue , i have no doubt that is a referndum on Hunting had been held in the uk the Ban would not be here ,for me i have little doubt a vociferous minority were allowed to dictate the agenda . In malta the shooters did concede ground and a reduced season lasting a period of days with a tag system was introduced even though the shooters won the ref ,there was concessions and thats how it should have been done here imo ,some common ground found after all the facts were on the table . instead laws were rushed through that suited neither side and left problems for the legal system ,bad arguments made bad laws . I am also against animal cruelty and would never willfully let an animal suffer ,its not what its about . |
