A billion to one, the men on both sides of my family don't make old bones. The women usually hit their 80's but nobody in the last 5 or 6 generations have hit a ton.
Report yorky June 16, 2015 10:05 AM BST
ive got longevity on my mums side , one of her relatives even lived into his 80s in a workhouse back in Victorian days, but the men and women on my dads side all died young , my dad 59 his dad 48 , so seen as ive worked like a horse all my life, that's hard not pulling a carriage down blackpool front, before anyone startsHappy,I reckon I will be lucky to see 70, (my pension age, jeeeezShocked),my uncle in oz as just got passed 60 ,despite a heart attack in his 50s, but I would reckon 50s to get to 100 if im honest
Report TheBaron June 16, 2015 10:13 AM BST
Not chance of me reaching 100 and thank god for that.  Going on my family history I should make early 80's but I'd trade many years if I could stay in good health.
Report SlippyBlue June 16, 2015 10:14 AM BST
My Dad was 59 as well yorky, worked pretty much every day of his life from aged 14 onwards and just as he was thinking of taking things easy, playing a bit of golf, going racing more often etc he got the most dreadful illness, mesothelioma and that was that.
Report alun2005 June 16, 2015 10:17 AM BST
No chance here I'm afraid, and I think 1.01 backers would be keen to get a full bank on it. No offers available anywhere though.
Report Burton-Brewers June 16, 2015 10:19 AM BST
I don't fancy my chances, but I am struggling to think of anyone on either side of the family who has died under the age of 80, quite a few went into their 90's, and I had an Auntie who made 102. Had a cousin die at 24 but that was an accident.

10/1 would be shorter but I drink too much.   My 4 sisters I would make them each 2/1 shots and my Mum (68) must be close to even money.

Gran 97 in Sept 4/6 to make a ton, still relatively fit.  My mum's dad died at 97 and my dad's parents were both mid eighties.

Paternal grandfather lived longest, clocked out at 81. (smoker, packed up at 65)

Paternal grandmother died when she had her first heart atack, at 67 (smoker. packed up at 65)

Dad died at 55 (smoker)

His brother at 61 (smoked a pipe, but didn't inhale the smoke)

His sister at 62 (non-smoker)

You can have 1,000 I get to a hundred.

Totally with you there.

Lost my gorgeous wife at 52, but the previous 4 years of highs and lows, heartache and pain, were just too much to suffer.

Frankly I wouldn't go through all that, having been with it twice. Just not worth it for maybe another year or two!

oldest on mams side is 83 , on dads side is 87

both parents over 80, but i suspect rationing during the war when they were
kids has increased their lifespan,  my generation of the family may benefit from
better health care but our diet is not as good with all the processed food.

me to live to a 100 ......40/1 ?
Report rob_dylan June 16, 2015 2:36 PM BST
If rationing was so good for them wish these old timers would stop whining about the horrors of rationing.

Is it a fact that genetics is partly a factor in determining how old a person would be expected to live once they reach say 65 years of age when many hereditary factors will already have occurred. Surely if you took a sample of people who were all 65 and in the same health at that stage how old their parents, grandparents lived would not be a factor anymore.
Report Zazu June 16, 2015 5:41 PM BST
Some families have history of diabets, cancer, MS. Still a factor imo

Old man going strong at 86. His brother 88 not out too.

Level of stress I think is key to health. I reckon most illnesses are caused or lengthened by stress. My dad is the most laid back non worrier I've ever known. I know a similar guy who plays cricket at 82.

Also have known great lovers of life who have lived to their 90s.

I'm a bit too melancholic and too much of a worrier to make a century...

I've mentioned her before but my Grandma will probably out live me!

She turned 90 on April fools day. Still drives, meets friends 3-4 times a week to play bridge, go to theatre or have a natter over a few drinks.

Still mentally as sharp as ever. She remembers stories down to the smallest detail. She keeps a detailed diary which helps I suppose.

Sad thing is she's lost a hell of a lot of her friends in the last decade. She lives on a glen in Scotland. Since 2000 13 of the 16  log cabins there have been sold because the occupants passed away. Sad

Maintain humanity under 500,000,000 in perpetual balance with nature - The Georgia Guidestones.

This will  require the extermination of nine-tenths of the world's population, me reaching 100 = 50,000/1

not a cat in hells chance ,most of my lot willed themselves to die by 75 i'm sure of it

i'm sure if i got past 80 i would start having suicidal thoughts as i'd be pretty damned depressed i'm pretty sure ,i really enjoy the now ,but fook to being old, looking old urghhhh   and esp in any sort of bad health - would do my head in seriously

How many people are in the position to retire at 40?

I'd say about 0.2% of the population!

Hmmm got to be at least 50s probably higher. Dad went at 69 and his dad at 78. Both very heavy smokers, whereas I don't smoke. Who knows just how much is down to genes and the rest environment etc. Stress will probably do me in though!
Report lfc1971 June 16, 2015 8:49 PM BST
The important thing is to separate yourself from the rat-race as you get older, it is nice to be still alive but not part of the world.
Report Big_Issue June 16, 2015 9:03 PM BST
You are all vastly undestimating your chance, its roughly 1 in 5000 overall, much less for men as 3/4 are women, so a conservative 7500/1
Report Coachbuster June 16, 2015 9:05 PM BST
indeed lfc

what kills men is the desire to impress ,peers, women, superiors etc and it creates a heavy load on the health as one gets older.

forget the alpha male nonsense and what others think, that's stressful  - do what YOU think ,enjoy life ,live your life in easy street ,lay out in the sun, drink wine and whisky and eat well and even smoke  in moderation  if you have to and you will be healthy -just keep away from stress ,that is the real killer

Any odds you like. You'd be safe at 1,000,000,000/1.

Mother and maternal grandfather just sneaked into their 50s before popping, and maternal grandmother didn't make it out the other side of her 50s either.

Dad's side do better, but probably due to alarmingly healthy lifestyles to which I have not adhered, to put it lightly.
