this ones  bit of a sad story;

Kyu Sakamoto had a worldwide hit with a song commonly known as Sukiyaki, the Japanese title is in the link. I'll bet plenty of those older than 40 will know the tune even if they don't remember him.

He died on board Jal flight 123 after the plane blew out a badly repaired rear bulkhead severing most of the controls. The crew kept it in the air for over half an hour before they hit a mountain, Sakamoto along with over 500 others died, amazingly 4 survived the crash.
