Teenagers and older morons now have the habit of imbibing nitrous oxide.

It has now become so popular that in the last few days there have been multiple cylinders stolen from both The Westmorland General Hospital in Cumbria and the Bridlington and District Hospital in Yorkshire.

It's no laughing matter.

So a few days after the government banned the sale of legal highs, including nitrous oxide, naughty people start nicking it from hospitals. Unintended consequences, and all that.

Note for surgeons in the north of England

If laughing gas takers come back in to either hospital after collapsing in the street and injuring themselves enough to require anaesthetic for surgery,  tell them you've run out, stick a rag with a stick in their gob to stop them screaming, and continue surgery without it.

I know you're not a drinker TGM, so this is not directed at you, but whatever the cost to the NHS of losing a few NO canisters, it pales into insignificance compared to the cost to the NHS of treating alcoholism and those who injure themselves and others while drunk.

There is also the fact that a lot of people have been taking legal highs - whose deleterious health effects are in most cases unknown - precisely because they are legal and not subject to the infantile prohibition of the real McCoy.

Evidence is emerging, for instance, that several of the cannabis substitutes on the market are powerfully addictive and cause serious kidney damage. These facts are known to the powers-that-be, but they would rather continue with the status quo for political reasons than tackle the outdated and moronic legislation which covers such substances.

jed.

I used to drink (1987-96) and got so much beer inside me in 9 years playing pub darts twice a week plus a session on Sundays that I gained over 5 stones. Thank fack I don't weigh that much any more.

I was drunk plenty of times, but never legless, never threw up, and never had to be taken to A&E because of it.

Legal high with common sense.

I actually drink less when play in darts, otherwise the scorer ends up looking like a colander.
