An insight into the upside down justice system we have in this country. Where causing possible offence is a far more serious business than causing physical injury.
Naked rambler: why have we spent £300,000 imprisoning this harmless eccentric?Stephen Gough has spent nine years in prison for refusing to wear clothes. But nobody else in the country is subject to the same conditions as himhttp://www.telegraph.co.u
Has anybody actually complained to the police about his behaviour?
I understand the Scottish barbarians jailed him for six years. He wouldn't have spent so long in prison if he'd murdered someone.
I think he's owed an awful lot in compensation for wrongful imprisonment.

Because the stupid, selfish old tw@t only thinks of himself and not others. If he repeatedly breaks the law, he should be punished. Since the existing punishment is not working, they should up the ante.
imo the punishment for crimes should significantly exceed the crime to act as a deterrent. If the punishment for burglary were a good old birching, say 50 lashes, and each additional transgression added 50 more, Which way do you think the burglary stats would go? I have no desire to see criminals that aren't a danger to society locked up at the taxpayer's expense, let's get some significant deterrents in place.

Perhaps we could also have some meaningful punishments while we're at it, for those who come on here calling others very rude names?

If someone spends nine years in prison for minor offences like his are. Then what do you do to someone who commits a serious crime?
The law has made nudity as heinous a crime as rape or murder.
Do some convicted terrorists in the UK actually serve that many years in jail?

Dr, its not the single offence he has spent nine years in jail for it's a cumulation of offences - if he continually breaks the law every time he is released then what is the alternative?
As with most things, a balanced view is needed here. I watched the documentary on this guy and had some sympathy with him in that I think he is harmless and truly believes in his right to keep doing it but ultimately he is breaking the law and it has to be viewed from the police’s perspective.
If they stop prosecuting people from being naked in public (and from my understanding, they only arrested him when near schools or likely to be seen by children) then before you know it you will have all sorts of perverts walking around in the nude and hanging around schools claiming their right to do it. Is that really what we want?
It doesn’t take much of a stretch of the imagination to see that we would then start having naked adverts on billboards etc. (If people are allowed to be seen walking around naked then what difference does it make if they are on a billboard?).
Where would it all end? would people really want to get on the bus with their 11 year old daughter and sit opposite some fat 40 year old with his wanger hanging over the edge of the seat? And don't even get me started on the hygiene implications on public transport!

Gin, you're trying to justify sending someone to jail for nine years for committing a string of minor offences.
If they had started to let him off after sending him to jail for a couple of short stays, it would still deter others from going around naked.
If they stop prosecuting people from being naked in public
No one has proposed that.
All that's been said it that they should have made an exception in his case before it ever got this far.

He should be arrested tried and sentenced only for taking his clothes off in public.
Obviously he's being sentenced for contempt of court as well.
Do repeat burglars and other serial offenders get sentenced for contempt of court along with their crimes? So why should he?
It's barbaric what they're doing to him.

"If they had started to let him off after sending him to jail for a couple of short stays, it would still deter others from going around naked." What on earth is wrong with people going around naked ? It's only a human body. What's wrong with that ? I think there should be a "naked day" every week, when it would be illegal to cover up one's body !.

How is it possible for someone to spend nine years of their life in jail, when all they have done is take their clothes off in public?
He hasn't stolen anything, he hasn't harmed anyone, he hasn't even insulted anyone, yet he's spent nine years of his life behind bars and most of those in solitary confinement.
What kind of monsters are the judges who keep sentencing him to that?

As adults we should not be offended in seeing a naked human being.
However as a parent you wouldn`t want a naked man walking near your children.
How would any parent react if there was a naked man in the swimming pool with their children?
Anyone who is a repeat offender, no matter how harmless the crime seems can tally up as many years in prison as a more dangerous convict.
The naked rambler is doing it to himself.

Just to add Stephen Gough is forfeiting time with his own children to pursue is principle. I think that he needs to accept that he is messing up his life. If he can`t accept that then perhaps he needs psychiatric care as Gery mentions.

Whether he's a head case or not, this treatment of Gough is turning into a national embarrassment.
I'm surprised that the branch of the United Nations that deals with humanitarian issues hasn't commented on it.

TMM he should be locked up until he gives an undertaking to obey the law of the land. He wants to walk nude wherever he goes and in front of whoever he passes whether they be children or not. He has scared children in the past with his behaviour and again I say I have absolutely no sympathy for him.

If I was by myself or even with my wife and passed him out for a ramble and he was lost and needed directions we would both happily stop to help. Definatley would not be complaining to the polis. But there is a time and place for dome things.

I would say the exact opposite – the reason there are not more “naked ramblers” is the fact that this guy keeps getting locked up as he continues to break the law.
In fact, I wouldn’t mind betting that if they gave up jailing him it wouldn’t be too long before other “naked Ramblers” appeared.
Just because it is a minor offence that should make no difference and the police have no real option other than to continually prosecute him. Otherwise you are saying to people that if they continue for long enough then they can be above the law.

I still think this man needs help more than punishment You see he does not think he is doing wrong...so by definition he must be insane
Still if he was kept in a psychiatric secure unit he would still have to be locked up..they would not allow him to stroll round the hospital naked
Still we prefer to punish people with mental health problems now instead of help, because society does not want to pay for their care
We live in a pretty appalling society now imo

He does know he is doing wrong and is most likely doing it to get a thrill like most other people who commit acts of public indecency and breach of the peaces.
After his couple of years of rambling where some may have had a certain sympathy for him for continuing with his "goal" he got on a plane, fully clothed (which he wouldn't have been able to get on had he turned up at the airport nude) then proceeded to go to the toilet and strip completely nude and come out, sit back in his seat and refuse to get dressed when asked to by the flight attendants. The police then had to meet the plane at the arrival gate to arrest him.
Anybody like Dr Crippen who suggests a man in his late forties stripping naked on an aeroplane and causing the police to be called to meet the aeroplane at the arrival gate isn't causing anybody else any harm must need their headchecked.
But this man would, so I do not see how he can be sane??????
On that basis anybody who commits are criminal offence is insane.

Gough is obviously off his rocker as ebulGery points out.
So is nine years in solitary confinement the correct medicine for someone like Gough?
We lecture the rest of the world on human rights, when we treat our own sick like that.

Where's the evidence that he is any more off his rocker than anyone else who continually re offends? There are numerous people in prisons who are there because they lead a lifestyle of petty crimes. Since when does not giving a **** about societies rules mean a person is insane?
An insane person does not decide to put their clothes on to get through airport security, board a plane, sit down the mid flight, then go to the toilet and get undressed. That is the rational thought process of a person deliberately attempting to cause a breach of the peace.

When you live in any society it's generally accepted that you observe the rules laws and customs. 9 years in prison!! this guy is obviously a glutton for punishment, attention seeking tw@t, so how much has it cost to jail this moron for 9 years.
How though did hundred of naked bike riders get away with it recently, double standards.
"he hasn't even insulted anyone," that's a gigantic presumptuous leap. So on that basis, for example it would be ok for mothers taking their children to school to bump into this cretin.
"Children should not be brought up to believe there is something wrong or offensive about the human body." if you have children artie do you go around the house naked in front of them and their friends, FFS get a grip.

Most people who commit petty crime do it for gain, revenge, personal advantage, etc....and think they will get away with it, even though they are usually caught
Stephen does not think he is committing a crime, he does it for a principle he believes in, even if he may mistaken, and he knows he will be arrested
So it is hardly the same is it?
He has never harmed anyone he has only shocked people I do not believe everybody should walk around stark naked myself, we see women displaying far too much naked flesh nowadays as it is
I think he is harmless myself albeit he does cause chaos wherever he goes, so I like him

You said he did this for sexual reasons earlier, so you are classing him as some kind of sexual threat, a flasher...but I do not agree. I think he does it for a principle he believes in, nobody has need to fear him, although I accept his appearance may alarm them, well it threatens their own beliefs. I like people who challenge convention, not VIOLENTLY, it makes us think, too many people believe what they are told nowadays, I believe this harms us.
Still we are never going to agree on this shrewd dude..so I am just making my own points here

Nobody has a need to fear a 45 year old man coming out of an airplane toilet (on an airplane with kids and elderly people on it) starkers then refusing to comply with requests of the air staff and captain? Gie us peace.

Never labeled him a sexual deviant. I labelled you one. If you want to explain how getting on a plane fully clothed to get through security then getting naked on the plane in front of kids and families furthers his 'principle' then please try and do so.
If he had have turned up at the airport naked he would have been arrested as soon as he entered the door but that would have not garnered him the attention he wished for by upsetting numerous other people.
One minute he is being persecuted because he should be treated as being insane and the next minute he is a man standing up for his principles. He can't be both, so try and make your decision.
