High street bookies offer odds of around 600/1 for correctly selecting 3 of the 6 numbers drawn in the Irish lottery. (Excludes bonus ball)
There are 45 numbers in the pot. Six are pulled out and you need to match all 3 numbers that you select on the slip.
What are the true odds?

I did trebles from 45 numbers, I thought it seemed a little high.

I would guess that trebles from 45 numbers would be the correct route.

then there are 6 numbers drawn so you get 20 chances to get 3 from 6 (6 x 5 x 4 / 3 x 2 x 1 ) (45 x 44 x 43 / 3 x 2 x 1 ) --------------------------- = 709.5 (6 x 5 x 4 / 3 x 2 x 1 ) |

 I thought, at first, that it was just a matter of 'how many trebles'? It took me a while to understand WHY the number of balls drawn out should have any effect on things. After all, if your three balls aren't drawn out...you don't win. But, of course, it's not as cut and dried as that. Fortunately.I prefer to bet in singles because the 'double' is a bet that was created for those who aren't content with just ONE loser! |
