An MP has backed the complaint of a gay couple who say they are offended by a “homophobic” road named Bangays Way in their village.

Bangays Way is a new cul-de-sac in a residential development in Borough Green, near Sevenoaks, Kent. It is named after a well-known parish councillor Frank Bangay who passed away in 1999.

But a married gay couple have taken offence to the additional “s” and say it makes the name “homophobic”. One, who did not wish to be named, told the Telegraph: “Having got over the initial humour, we reflected that this street name was actually pretty offensive. Somehow seeing it on the sign made it look even worse.”

After contacting the chairman of Borough Green Parish Council to express their “horror” at the name, the couple contacted Tom Tugendhat MP asking for the road name to be changed to Frank Bangay Way.

The MP said: “His complaint is not without merit, so I am perfectly happy to support him.”

Mr Bangay’s daughter Marian Smith said she was insulted by the remarks, adding: “We are all very proud of our surname and both of my parents were very prominent in the village for many may years.”

If they don't like it, don't live there. There are some nice houses on Kilpuffs Lane they could move into instead.

Should be told to get over themselves - 'cept there's probably something some emotionally and socially stunted half-wit pretend-victim would find offensive in that.

There's a kid at my daughters school a couple of years above her, who has taken the very brave decision to come out as gay and is being bullied to hell as a result. A real person with a real problem with homophobia, but whose issue can be asily marginalised by the brain dead who'll read the Standard article and go 'Fkn puffs - they're all the same'

Where on earth do we begin with a non-story like this?

Pretending To Be Offended truly has become our national sport.

The Conservative MP that saw "merit" in the ridiculous complaint should himself step down immediately and seek re-election such is his alarming lack of judgement in this matter.

The new Parliament hasn't officially Opened yet, but we are off to a desperate start.

He sympathises (or pretends to) because it's an easier option than:

a) Having to go on a sensitivity training course
b) Being lambasted by all manner of rinky-dink little sectional interest groups, stamping their size fives in a huff
c) Having to confront some of the REAL problems affecting gay people, like to one I outlined in my earlier post.
d) All of the above.

Agree with rtb.  It is tw@ts like this that stop the real problems being confronted.  The same with racism and sexism.

Agreed... whilst this couple may see it as a victory it undermines the real and genuine concerns of discrimination and abuse suffered by many members of the British fudgepacking community...

Gay was a charming little word until the homersexuals hijacked it.Bit ironic to complain about a word containing it now.

No advisable to direct gay couples in the narrow walkways of Camden Town by saying  "Go up the back passage".

If the road is named after a person, why does it have an "s" on the end? I can't think of any other occurrences of this, although I can think of numerous "famous name" roads, which may suggest that it was done with some mischievness...

They say they found it humourous but have expressed horror? I'd find the thought of somebody smearing my jewels with peanut butter and dropping a rat on me to gnaw my knackers off horrifying but the name of a road which was Carry On Type funny hardly merits the word. What next? Ban Chebb Lane and Muffdive Road?

I'd have thought that the 'Gay Community' (copyright 'Crimewatch' 1989) might better spend their time exposing truly sickening events like the one below, rather than worry about some unintended 'double entendre' so lame that even Finbarr Saunders would have declined it.

Just look what these peace-loving sorts (and there are many more in the UK) thought about the Gay citizens of the UK. Even The Guardian reported it, a rare example of that newspaper removing its head from the sand.

Say what you like about Peter Tatchell (and doubtless you will /have :) ) - the more you get to know about him the less there is to like - at least he DOES get his priorities right when it comes to protesting the kind of homophobia and cowardly abuse, backed by supposed religious doctrine - of the kind you've outlined.

Many left-leaning folk get turned into a pretzel trying to fathom out where they stand on this kind of thing. One of the many problems of being hidebound by 'right-on-ness'I suppose.
