The words of the new  Culture Secretary by John Whittingdale, who will deal with the renewal of the BBC charter, which covers how the organisation is funded.

In October, Mr Whittingdale said the licence fee was "worse than the Poll Tax".

Lets just hope he has the nerve to take the action needed to get rid of this outdated and unfair concept.

The total income from licence fees was £3.7261 billion in 2013–14 of which 607.8 Million or 16.3% was provided by the Government through concessions for those over the age of 75.
Thus, the licence fee made up the bulk of the BBC's total income of £5.066 Billion in 2013–2014.
£5 Billion = £5,000,000,000

What do you suggest should happen?
Do away with the licence fee and make the BBC take adverts or just do away with the BBC?

they should have adverts  imo

self funding - see how they manage then -  they'd collapse overnight ,BBC has always been the poorest of the main b'casters , miles behind C4 .

Force feeding the dumbest members of soc' with Eastenders, Nat lottery etc

the Govt shouldn't be allowed to run anything imo - they don't know how to budget responsibly .

they'd probably pay something like £2000 to have a door painted - it would involve various certificates 'costly insurances, health and safety seminars , planners, checkers ,further checks ,further health and safety checks, closure of nearby roads with 4 way traffic lights ,the Police ,fire brigade on hand, a legal team ,admin charges   and other reps and expenses .

Leave it to provate companies ffs

I'd sooner watch an hour of Eastenders (which I don't watch) than an hour of propaganda ridden Benefits Street.

Btw 'White Dee' was all over the news for a while.

I haven't seen any similar blanket coverage on 'Black Dee', who was apparently arrested along with others for drug offences last week.
