I used to have to run him about slippy when he was doing promotional work for the company I worked for.
I agree with everything you've said about him. About the only thing he ever did that's worth commenting on was when he was writing for the SL and exposed the Tote's policy of reducing large dividends by falsifying the stakes. |

I think he's alright tbh, can see why people dislike him though, speaking your mind will always rub a lot of people up the wrong way but unlike someone like Katie Hopkins he doesn't do it for effect. Genuinely likes his racing and football and gambling and the people he is rude to are normally rude people.

McCririck was already holder of the British Press Award for Specialist Writer of the Year at the time (1978) and was voted Campaigning Writer of the Year for the Tote expose. Considering he had the whole Establishment ranged against him, right up as far as Thatcher's Home Secretary Willie Whitelaw, who was determined to cover up what McCririck was investigating, it was an amazingly tenacious feat on McCririck's part to uncover what the Tote was up to under Woodrow Wyatt. |

I knew of the guy who replaced WW.
Was the guy who headed their Scottish operation Jim Harvie I think was his name (only met him twice). He stayed for three years then quit and emigrated to Australia. I was working the day that pool was announced. A couple of loud ones but a ridiculously low dividend. They had put a £50 winning bet in instead of a £5 one. I had McCriricks book but lost it some years ago. |

As others have said, Big Mac used to be a top racing journalist (not a pundit because he never seemed to understand form or race-reading) who was not afraid to take on the establishment. On Channel 4 he was a breath of fresh air in reporting from the ring.
But he was the author of his own misfortune as he got older and lazier and just became a parody of his former self, a one-man freak show apparently determined to alienate people from racing as he insulted women and young people in particular. |

His wife isn't too fond of tradesmen.
My mate and a few others were working on the house next door and parking space is at a minimum down his road. She same came out and started ranting about their vans, they should be moved to make space for visitors and residents. And one morning my mate said 'Morning John' as he walked up the road. He completely ignored him. Appearances aren't everything. My mate also decorated Brian Harvey's house, he looks like a right diquehead, but my mate said he was a nice bloke. He says Nigel Slater(off the telly apparently) is also a nice bloke, but I have no idea who he is or what he does, and never bothered googling. |

His expose of the sharp practice operated by the Tote surely is a as naught in the context of the offish, offensive, self promoting and ignorant attitudes that constitute the rest of his career?

In October 2012 it was announced by Channel 4 that McCririck would not be included in the team presenting racing from January 2013,[4] which McCririck blamed on ageism.[5] On 13 November, the tribunal ruled against McCririck: "The unanimous judgement of the Tribunal is that the Claimant's claim of direct age discrimination fails."[6] It continued, "All the evidence is that Mr McCririck's pantomime persona, as demonstrated on the celebrity television appearances and his persona when appearing on Channel 4 Racing, together with his self-described bigoted and male chauvinist views, were clearly unpalatable to a wider potential audience." The panel was told by witnesses from the television station and IMG (the production company) that he was dropped because he was "offensive" and "disgusting".[7]

Well, I enjoyed the programme very much.
He may well be offensive, a bully and a buffoon - but he's always interesting and told many tales last night well worth hearing, in particular about the early days of betting shops, being a bookies' runner and his time at the BBC - as well as many others. One thing's for sure - Channel 4 racing has been a far poorer place (and totally devoid of humour) without him and the rest of the old team. Poke you finger at that 'stab hands' Cunningham. |
