In the ballot box - a pencil? not even a bookie pen?

Last time i voted they had stubby little pencils? not even a bookies pen to cast your vote. I walked away thinking will they open the box, use an eraser and reseal it. I'm sure it could be done.
i'm taking a marker pen with me this week.
