Schools are spending millions on supporting poor children and plugging funding gaps in public services with heads comparing them to "mini-welfare states"
Schoolchildren are bearing the brunt of David Cameron’s five-year rampage of brutal cuts, a shock report reveals.
Appalled headteachers are increasingly having to give handouts of food and clothes to youngsters.
Schools are spending millions on supporting poor children and plugging funding gaps in public services.
Russell Hobby, the general secretary of the National Association of Headteachers, said: “This is a hidden, national scandal. The education service is now a miniature welfare state.”
After the Tory-led Coalition’s five years in power, three out of four schools are regularly providing free food to hungry youngsters who do not qualify for free school meals.
Worried teachers are even digging deep into their own pockets by bringing in food to give famished children.
Nearly half of headteachers said they are having to provide pupils with clothes, including underwear and socks.
Bus passes are being bought for struggling families to get their children to and from school.
PE kit is also being provided for many youngsters from households that are too poor to pay for it.
Children from deprived families are getting school trips to stop them missing out on experiences enjoyed by their better-off classmates and to prevent them feeling like outsiders.

Maybe if the parents cut out the cigarettes, booze and betting they could feed their own kids. Even better maybe if they stopped churning them out in the first place they wouldn't be such a strain on the system. |

Then cut their budgets if they've got so much money to spend that they can waste it on stuff that shouldn't concern them. They must have some fiddles going if they're using public money in this way. |

Even better maybe if they stopped churning them out in the first place they wouldn't be such a strain on the system. 2 blokes discussing this on the radio this morning - the host says surely parents shouldn't be sending their children to school unwashed and without breakfast. Other bloke disagrees saying its not so straightforward as sometimes the parent (I doubt its parents !) is a drug addict I thought, that's alright then ! |

I work with a 68yo that works 6 days a week despite £2,000 per month pension and £20k plus in the bank.
He dole`s out £150 per week to a sponge of a son that claims he is too nervous to attend the job centre, and sends money to another son to pay for protection in on of HMP. I have known all of this family for 12 years and find it disgusting that a local food bank helps with most of their meals. Have always wondered how many user`s are genuine in the need for this service.  |
