Easy to sneer and poke fun when you're fortunate enough to be in the position of not having to use food banks to survive

Education is the answer not food banks/charity. Anybody picking up food from a food bank should have to attend a course in cooking and how to make cheap meals. Throw in some money management and you'll have what used to be called Home Economics, a subject taught in all schools years ago.

They will quote figures that are given to them by their advisors. In this case, the difference in the figures is pedantic.

Porridge oats £1.50 for 1kg
2 litres of milk £1
Large loaf   40p
Potatoes, carrots, onions etc.
Of course the poor won't have computers or smart phones so a trip to the library to learn a few cheap recipes.

Facts can you give some examples of how a person or family could be in positions not to have enough money for food. I am assuming that no debt is involved and you have to prioritise buying food before luxury items including alcohol and cigarettes.

Where did I say it was acceptable?

Do you think its acceptable to quote figures that are double the real number?

Presumably you think it would be okay for Cameron to say that 2000 jobs a day were being created (when the real number is 1000) or Ed to say that the deficit is actually twice as big as it really is or (you get the picture...........)

I'd stop councils from using taxpayers money to fund the food banks.

If charities want to earn a living out of supplying free food to certain people that's their business.
Nevertheless using taxpayers' money to operate their scam is not on.

For the cost of a few gallons of fuel he could get a bike and cycle there but this is where education comes in again.

The main reason for going to a food bank - benefit delay

Note not that benefits are too low, but that they are late. People end up planning their finances so that the day before the benefit payment hits their bank account they literally don't have enough coins to fill a tomy penny falls machine. They don't have to spend like this - as the trussell trust data shows, benefits are more than enough so you can build up savings for a holiday as many benefiterati do, it's that people get into a pattern of this dependent living on a knife-edge behaviour.

Why do people operate their finances this way? If you walk on the edge of a cliff you are technically on dry land but it's not a good idea.
Why does government make mistakes or have processes which delay payments? Governments are always getting things wrong.

There's no answer. But for practical purposes use of food banks is significantly less than it was 5 years ago.
Report paddletoe May 1, 2015 11:12 AM BST
Once again I would ask to see some real life examples and evidence which shows that the present benefits limits is not enough for the provision of food when non essentials spending items are bought after you have got your groceries.
You just have to stand behind an immigrant in any supermarket to see the foods they buy and how far a small amount of money can go these days when buying food which has become less and less expensive than it used to be.
Report paddletoe May 1, 2015 11:16 AM BST
If you choose to prioritise cigarettes, alcohol, other non essential items or get yourself into debt over the provision of food then surely its no one elses fault. Of course when parents make these wrong and selfish priorities their children should not suffer and food banks do serve a good cause in such cases.
Report giggitygiggity May 1, 2015 11:18 AM BST
I'm not talking about tax...just trying to make the point if they didn't smoke they would have money to buy food and not go to a food bank

Saw the same in Scotland at the referendum with the Yes campaigners spitting bile at anyone who dared oppose independence.

The abuse is fine aka. It adds to the tribal fun but what seems absent from most (not all there are honourable exceptions) is a total absence of a sense of humour and the ridiculous. Sure some of them will point and laugh but that merely harks back to the bile you mention. Politicians in particular are often perishers. It's our duty to mock them all.

I put it down to frustration at seeing their arguments consistently pulled to pieces.

You'd think they'd wise up but few of them ever do.

I think because they refuse to concede defeat, the vast majority of them who come on here must be living on benefits.
All they can see is the side that is likely to give them the most in handouts.
