Grey Sombrero, was that not the horse that was clear in the national & had a very slow motion fall possibly at the Chair ?

Yes, it sadly broke it`s neck and was destroyed. Shoemaker rode it I think.

Pumphol - Nearly right.  He was clear of everything, except Crisp, when as you say he went at the Chair.  He appeared to jump the fence perfectly and then apparently put his foot in a big hole which brought him down. Very sad.  He won a Whitbread and I think the Midlands Grand National.

mightymac - Le Moss - should have got that.  I did recognise the colours though

Re Grey Sombrero - pretty sure it was a shoulder he broke, but was definitely put down.  That must have been Willie Shoemaker's last ride in the National

Thanks mightymac.  Good to see, although I was never a great fan of Dettori senior. I felt a bit hypocritical getting his autograph at Goodwood year before last but was one of the few Guineas winning jocks I didn't have.

I did know it was Shoemark.  I was trying unsuccessfully to be witty

I never thought that Mill Reef would be toppled from his place at the Top of the Mountain, but I'd reckoned without STS. Looks and power in one awesome package.

And I will NEVER, EVER forgive the brilliant Brigadier Gerard from beating Mill Reef in the 1971 2000 Guineas, the greatest ever renewal. Not a lot of people know this but shortly before they entered the stalls, Brigadier Gerard did a massive dump, which clearly must have helped the horse feel a lot better in itself.

Personally I think the Stewards should have disqualified him and given him a 6 months "bringing Racing into Disrepute" type ban. Instead he got the glory. Imagine if the great Virginia Wade had carried on like that on Centre Court just before serving for the Championship. Worse still if Ray Reardon had done a similar thing in the sacred hush of the Crucible Theatre.  What on earth were the Stewards playing at?

My Dad's best mate from County Offaly, Paddy Scully, bred that wonderful horse Sound Man. He was a truly wonderful horse.

It sure was. Remember the first time I saw it in the flesh at Ayr (I think) and was an impressive looking horse. G W Richards trained it perhaps?

I would say an absolutely fantastic horse was Tingle Creek and one of the greatest natural jumpers ever. Was David Mould his regular jockey??

Grand Canyon was another personal favourite of mine, beautiful dark horse and terrific jumper trained by Derek Kent. NZL bred and Won the Colonial Cup in America.

Over hurdles my all time favourite was Gay George owned by the Duke of Devonshire and trained by Fulke Walwyn. Had the pleasure of seeing him jump in the flesh and I have never seen a quicker jumper of a hurdler in my life. Nothing could get near him on Firm ground. Sad day when he was killed at Windsor

That's right David Mould. Tingle Creek jumped them into the ground. I still have a photo of him in flight, from the Sporting Life. I still cant believe he took of so early and landed comfortably on the other side.

That's really strange. I backed Gay George in a biggish way (for me) to win the CH. I think he had won the Swinton but of course never lined up at Chelts.He was quick over his hurdles and flamboyant.

Speaking of photos of horses in flight... was before my time but I've been looking for the famous photo of Pendil for ages. Can't believe it's not on this interweb malarkey.

Derek Kent was a master with those horses bought from far and wide. What was his other really good one?

What year was that dobbo? I remember him being withdrawn from a couple of Champion Hurdles due to the ground. Did you ever see him jump a hurdle at the racecourse on firm going? It was a joy to behold. Sadly it proved his downfall.

79 or 80 I think.I never saw him in the flesh.79 I think I backed Sea Pigeon in a double with Border Incident and cried after the Gold Cup so maybe it was 1980.I am hopeless with years.

Gay George was born in 1976 so it must have been a little later, maybe 1981 or 1982

Border Incident was a good un trained by Richard Head and Francome was a master on him.

I use a complicated formula regarding years that involves  divorce date multiplied by remarriage divided by the year I moved back home and the solid fact that I know Empery won the 1976 Derby!

I backed Pendil one day at Kempton I think. He was back after injury and was about 16/1 in a three horse race. Game Spirit and Spanish Steps were the other two.

A few other favourites that spring to mind, Chaplins Club, Provideo and the very rapid Brondesbury. The latter two both trained by Bill O'Gorman I think if memory serves.

I said 'At evens it's mad, at this price it's a risk well worth taking.'

Do you mind of Horage? One of the first trained by Mattie McCormack, might even have been his first ever runner. He was a very good horse and the trainer landed a massive gamble when he won a Maiden at Ayr (I think) on his debut at good odds. With hindsight, he must have been the biggest certainty ever that day.

Dobbo, was the other Kent horse that you were thinking about Narribini perhaps??

Great story about Grand Canyon. When Kent was shipping 30 NZL bred horses to UK, one failed to make the boat and Grand Canyon was added to the stock just to make up the numbers.

That was to Spelling. No mac that's not the one. I know he had a horse called Full Sutton that won a couple but when he had Grand Canyon he had another top rater but I cant remember its name.Ridden by P Haynes no doubt
