Man that was sweet. I didn't see the incident but a lad I went to school with who was a very nice fella and last I heard he as a born again christian. We did a bit of sparring in our teens and then I saw him a few years later and this motherfrucker was suddenly huge and he'd decided to get into the pro game. He had an up and down career but one year I was down in Cheltenham for the festival and there he was on TV taking the British heavyweight title.

Anyway a mutual friend told me that before he turned pro they were out in Manchester (I think it was) and Mike who was a very softly spoken guy who was just so nice to people but his problem, such that it was, was that a bit like Tyson he spoke with a very slight lisp and a had a relatively high voice for such an imposing guy. A gang of lads started winding up him up calling him a fairy etc. Obviously he wasn't best pleased with this but like the gent he is he gave them an out and asked them for an apology and they'd say no more about it. Obviously not sensing the danger brewing they misread the situation and took it as further affirmation of what they perceived to be weakness and went for him.

Big mistake.

Yes Mikael. Nice fella. Anecdotally I was told he blitzed one of the Ward's who was giving it the big swagger in Smokies (I think it was) and the family weren't at all happy about it. He had to go and have a word accompanied by his trainer to straighten it out. I don't know if this is true or not but the first story I think is true because the lad who told me isn't prone to bullshiit.

He was a good lad Mike, Mikael. My mate who was an Indian lad was getting some abuse from Mike's brother and some of his mates and my mate went for him and chased him off. Mike could have played the big brother and gone steaming in but as I was heading down to see my mate I could see them deep in conversation and wandered over to check out if everything was cool. Mike was as good as gold about it and told my mate if he had any more trouble from any of the local lads to give him a shout and he'd have a word with them and my mate never got any more trouble.
