You don't own the DVD?

Shame on you ;)

Dear Monte

I own the DVD .The true test of a great film is that you watch it when its on TV anyway.
Report orioles April 25, 2015 12:49 AM BST
Very true. Although sometimes I think it's on a loop in my mind :)

Danny: The joint I'm about to roll requires a craftsman. It can utilise up to 12 skins. It is called a Camberwell Carrot.

Marwood: It's impossible to use 12 papers on one joint.

Danny: It's impossible to make a Camberwell Carrot with anything less.

Withnail: Who says it's a Camberwell Carrot?

Danny: I do. I invented it in Camberwell, and it looks like a carrot.

I couldn't stay the course. Must be one of the worst ever made, is that the attraction?

Apparently the Monty character was based on the famous director Franco Zeffirelli, and Withnail was based on the actor Vivian MacKerrell, who was in "Ghost Story" made in 1974 and probably on YouTube. However wild and outlandish Withnail seems, he was only a pale caricature of MacKerrell...Shocked

Have you been living in a cave in the Himalayas for the last 25 years? This is an all time classic film man.

I lasted about 10 minutes of this drivel some years ago  .

I watched about an hour then chucked it. It did wonders for Richard E. Grant's career.

I forced myself to look at nearly 30 minutes of it.
Sorry slippy but it was pure drivel with the worst casting I've ever seen.

Haven't heard of it either Akabula. I assumed it was a tv drama from the original post.

Don't waste even a second of your time watching it Foinavon it's that bad.
I would rather sit through an hour of Lenny Henry than another 5 minutes of that.

I think it's the greatest comedy ever made but can understand why people don't like it.

Plot? Two failed actors get pi$$sed a lot, go on holiday and come home.

The dialogue borders on surreal which I realise some will find annoying but for me, something like  "The poop will boil through the glaze. We'll never be able to use the dinner service again." is one of the funniest lines ever uttered.

You get it or you don't and if you don't, there's no accounting for taste.

Get any 'Withnaillers' together and it usually end sup with them quoting lines to each other. I'm up for that with the best of 'em but it can seem very self-reverential,exclusive and then 'so f*****g what?' to anyone who isn't a dyed in the wool fan.

I just love the use of the English language. The script here is everything since the plot is thinner than any of the 12 Rizlas needed to make a Camberwell Carrot, there are no action sequences or any other traditional cinematic devices to keep the viewer hooked (no sex scenes, in fact women appear for about .001% of the film at a guess).

But what glorious word-play and use of language, juxtaposing brilliantly with late 60's counterculture Britain.

Many a quote here :
.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0094336/trivia?tab=qt&ref_=tt_trv_qu

Marwood: Give me a Valium, I'm getting the FEAR!

Danny: [very calmly] You have done something to your brain. You have made it high. If I lay 10 mls of diazepam on you, it will do something else to your brain. You will make it low. Why trust one drug and not the other? That's politics, innit?

Marwood: I'm gonna eat some sugar.
[he goes to the kitchen]

Danny: I recommend you smoke some more grass.

Marwood: No way, no ****g way.

Danny: That is an unfortunate political decision. Reflecting these times.

Withnail: What are you talking about, Danny?

Danny: Politics, man. If you're hanging onto a rising balloon, you're presented with a difficult decision - let go before it's too late or hang on and keep getting higher, posing the question: how long can you keep a grip on the rope? They're selling hippie wigs in Woolworths, man. The greatest decade in the history of mankind is over. And as Presuming Ed here has so consistently pointed out, we have failed to paint it black.
