around October my old kettle packed up and was going to throw it away but heard somewhere that some birds like to nest in old tins teapots etc ,so drilled a hole in the back took the lid off and screwed it to a wooden post about 5tf up with a bit of foliage cover in the garden of my holiday home , stayed for a weekend for the 1st time since the winter and lo and behold robins have made a nest in it, can see both birds flying in and out but have not looked inside to see if any eggs or young as don't want to scare the birds off , so consider this before disposing of any old kettles or tins etc ,when I am sure there are chicks in the nest I will try and post a pic or 2 .

Make sure there's a drainage hole at the bottom for when it rains.

If its 5ft up you may be straining to take a cosy picture.

ffs just looked in the kettle as no activity and there are 3 eggs broken inside and the remains of one on the ground ,fecking squirrel or something ! will have to move the kettle into a more covered plot !

had a Robins nest in a hanging basket insert that has being stored against the shed ,the insert made of mesh and moss was open side facing shed ,anyway a robin had raised a brood ,went top the shed to get something ,parent was held up with a mouthful of small worms on the fence .A magpie flew down and sat on the opposite fence ,magpie knew straight away what a robin with a mouthful of worms meant ,it observed the robin ,head slightly moving ,tilting,crocadile like eye .Went back into house ,within mins the magpie was in ,first capturing and killing the Robin .Discarded body on the neighbours lawn and returned for the chicks .Just a sad fact of life .
some days later the body of the magpie and its partner were found dead ,noone knows what happened ,suspected victims of a cat . another sad fact of life |

Hate Magpies with a vengeance. They are without doubt my number one (not for eating) target, when I'm out on my farmer friends land.
Don't get as much satisfaction from killing two rats as I do from one Magpie. They jump on hedgerows to bring the birds from the nests, and then eat the fekking eggs and chicks. Have to take them from a distance as they are wiley little b@stards and nothing more satisfying than to see them hanging upside down in a tree! |

Even Magpies have to eat. If you killed all animals that killed other animals, there wouldn't be much left!

could well be magpies, as I have seen a pair of them in the garden as well as squirrels, also have a nest box at home in the garden and its a purpose built one made of a breeze block /concrete type one with a very small entrance hole and have had blue tits and great tits nest each year for the last 10 years ,they seem to alternate each year i.e blue tits one year great tits the next ,and sometimes get a magpie sitting on top of the nestbox trying to work out how to get in to the nest ,so far they have all had chicks with no problems other than the odd dead one every now and then when I clean it out ,that concrete nestbox I bought all those years ago ,it said on the box guaranteed to have birds nesting ,I thought it was a load of bullshyte but to be fair they have nested every year since I got it ,and they average about 9-10 chicks a year ,good value as I got it from a carboot sale for a couple of quid !
