the wee man's a genius. i never understand why he doesn't get more credit as one of the great lyricists. america & the boxer are my favs amongst many.
I am just a poor boy Though my story's seldom told, I have squandered my resistance For a pocket full of mumbles, such are promises All lies and jests Still a man hears what he wants to hear And disregards the rest

One of mine. 7 O'clock news, It's a simple Juxtaposition of the Hymn Silent Night as a background to a typical newscast being read (in the usual monotone matter of fact way) robotically describing the days horrors, Vietnam war, 9 Student nurses murdered in Chicago etc, etc, A simple idea, yes, but bl00dy effective
Unfortunately the youtube uploads don't do it justice, but bear with it the news broadcast (Deliberately) gets clearer and louder as the song progresses. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WgYFXCUEL4Y

I can hear the soft breathing Of the girl that I love, As she lies here beside me Asleep with the night, And her hair, in a fine mist Floats on my pillow, Reflecting the glow Of the winter moonlight.
She is soft, she is warm, But my heart remains heavy, And I watch as her breasts Gently rise, gently fall, For I know with the first light of dawn I'll be leaving, And tonight will be All I have left to recall.
Oh, what have I done, Why have I done it, I've committed a crime, I've broken the law. For twenty-five dollars And pieces of silver, I held up and robbed A hard liquor store.
My life seems unreal, My crime an illusion, A scene badly written In which I must play. Yet I know as I gaze At my young love beside me, The morning is just a few hours away.

C'mon take me to the Mardi Gras Where the people sing and play Where the dancing is elite And there's music in the street Both night and day
Hurry take me to the Mardi Gras In the city of my dreams You can legalize your lows You can wear your summer clothes In the New Orleans
And I will lay my burden down Rest my head upon that shore And when I wear that starry crown I won't be wanting anymore
Take your burdens to the Mardi Gras Let the music wash your soul You can mingle in the street You can jingle to the beat of Jelly Roll Tumba, tumba, tumba, Mardi Gras Tumba, tumba, tumba, day

When I think back On all the crap I learned in high school It’s a wonder I can think at all And though my lack of education Hasn’t hurt me none I can read the writing on the wall
