Read that today, Devilfish was a character alright. He was only 61, no age really.

My mate from Spain played with him a good few times, they used to chop if either of them got to the final table regardless of finishing position.

I know nothing about Poker but didn't Devilfish post regularly on here a long time ago? Pretty sure he did, if it was the same person.

Sad news. I'm a Poker watcher rather than a Poker player and enjoyed watching the man go about his business. The books about him are a hoot as well.

There was a nice documentary about him on BBC years ago called 'Jackpot', which is worth a watch. Bound to be on YouTube.

Never really got into Poker but used to love watching Devilfish on the Late Night Poker series on Channel 4.

I started playing No Holdem after watching Late Night Poker, a great character at the table. You never check twice to the Devilfish.

I loved his spats with the abhorrent Hellmuth on Premier League Poker.

I remember him outplaying Ivey in the 2003 WPT, one of the great final table performances. He complained when they showed the highlights, and never showed many 4 bet bluffs against Ivey .

Sad day, loads of great memories.

kenny - there was a regular poster on here years ago called Devilfish who from what I remember sounded like a serious punter. Who he actually was ive no idea.

Its was a wonder how he was ever let into the States.......especially with his criminal past.

I can imagine that from him Slippy , he was a good sport in that respect

His book is a great read for anybody that hasn't already read it (one of my favs)

He was also a big horseracing punter so no doubt he posted on these forums from time to time , though obv am not sure it was him posting as Devilfish , Kenny

He shot up in my estimation after reading his book tbh

I don't think he made much from poker after dark but more the shady night time game he ran around playing around the clock

The things he did out in vegas when he was basically All or Bust would be enough to give any normal guy a heart attack & resulted in none of the known High Rollers wanting to play him

I half remember one incident during a televised competition that made me laugh.

Devilfish and Phil Hellmuth became involved in a big hand when three clubs appeared on the flop.  I can't recall what either player was dealt, but I think Phil considered his hand to be good at this point even though he didn't hold a club.  The turn brought a fourth club and Dave Ulliot bet out, leading Hellmuth to start grumbling "there's no way you've got a flush" or words to that effect.

"Yes I have, you bastard. I've got the five of clubs" said Devilfish.  And then a slanging match developed, each man getting increasingly agitated and more insulting.  I think it ended with Dave trying to get a cash side bet going that he held the five of clubs with something along the lines of "I'll have £500 right now you **** that the five of fúcking clubs is in my hand."  Hellmuth didn't take the side bet, but he did eventually call.

The river was the five of clubs!

iirc Devilfish was talking to Doyle Brunson, "Your the guy that wrote Super System?", "Yes" said Doyle, "It's only good for wiping my arse" retorted Devilfish Both have a mutuial respect for each other and it was said in jest.

He was the first poker face I recognised on TV. A sad loss for the game.

used to enjoy watching the likes of devilfish , vicky coren and the hendon mob on late night poker.

You got the hand spot on but there was little of the baiting you suggested. Not that Devilfish was averse to it, it just din't happen in this instance.

I read Super System when I was first beating sit n go's around 2005
I got half way though the book , Belly Buster straight draws - I bet them Real Hard - etc & honestly thought to myself 'if this guy was the best in the World then I should have No problems at all'

I always got the feeling Devilfish would've preferred a bare knuckle street fight with Tony G rather than sit & play cards

Many a player would have thumped him. Devilfish could deliver a fine put down but he never went too far with it.

Agreed he went too far there, aka, but it's safe to say that he's no fan of Russia generally. He's still having a pop at them on his Twitter and Facebook accounts.

That's actually from the same tournament as the Tony G/Devilfish link I posted earlier.

I usually found him hilarious, although I probably wouldn't think so if he was telling to 'get on my bike' like he did to many others. Either way, it's a shame he won't be seen playing again. He did post this on his Twitter...

Thought it was fairly well known that Hellmuth got socked by Sam 'could have been the best ever' Grizzle. I'm sure they subsequently met at a table in a big tourney and Hellmuth gets a measure of revenge.

That tourney was only the WSOP main event! The confrontation gets a mention at the start...

Good memories of Late Night Poker growing up. RIP also to Hemish Shah who we lost back in 2001

I didn't know that. I knew they had clashed at one time but I thought it was a case of 2+2 =5 with that story.
