Been to the shops this morning and found the following:
Marks and Spencer - expensive, little choice and the quality is cr@p Next - some strange looking tops in there that must be designed for twenty-one year olds who weigh no more than 10.5st. Not for me. Bhs - Cheap but awful just awful.
Last hope is John Lewis when i am up that way but not holding out much hope.

YOOX also have a huge clearance sale on upto 80% off & do have a few bargains although I bought 3 jackets & had to send them all back

Everyone has their own taste of course. I like some casual clothes from Edinburgh woollen mill and am wearing a James Pringle fishermans sweater from them at the moment.

Used to love shopping, but it's not the same doing it on your own.
I've only done it once, in the last fourteen years, and that was at the outlet in York.
We used to go to Leeds every Wednesday, after picking up my wedge, and always ended up at "Da Marios", "Bistro 5", "Bibis" or "Ninos On The Park" at Roundhay.
Never heard of "Slaters" but got some superb clothes from "Lord John" (in the new Albion Street precinct) and otherwise "Cecil Gee" and "Austin Reed".
Good days...Good times....

Slaters is a very nice shop, as you would expect in Leeds these days. A disturbing recent trend, however, seems to be to put patches on the elbows on a lot of mens' jackets, just like my school teacher's had over 50 years ago.

You couldn't get them from a charity shop so cheap!
How come the "Stick Insect" models still have them too small? I guess they have to skimp on material to get them down to the price!
That with minimal lapels and skinny trousers has to dictate the fashion.
Incidentally, do you know why "Wide Boys" were thus called?
Obviously had to take a peek kenny...Four suits for only £60.00!You couldn't get them from a charity shop so cheap! How come the "Stick Insect" models still have them too small? I guess they have to skimp on materialto get them down to the price! That
Hey kenny, do you know of "Great Clothes" on York Road?
It's an age since I was there (back into the 80s). Some superb clothes there. I bought three suits in one visit. Two by "Griff" and one by "Boss".
Best thing is you just park right outside.
Is it still there, as again I am in my time machine?

I absolutely hate shopping and I don't really need anything anyway. M & S for socks and boxer shorts etc and Fat Face stock pretty good shirts and tee shirts but that's about it really.

4 suits £60! I hope you don't think that's why I go, Aunty.
I do indeed remember Great Clothes. I probably still have the card somewhere, although I'd forgotten all about it.
I used to frequent a pub quite regularly on York Road. The Prospect, or Prospect City as it was known. Plus The Cherry Tree which was not far away.

Weird Fish, Fat Face, Monterey at Debenhams, Jack Wills stuff looks good, if a bit preppy, bit pricey but might try some stuff in the sale.
Next for jeans.
What age is middle-aged?

M&S have all different ranges so not sure how you can say all their quality is crap. Ultimately you get what you pay for...e.g. their cheaper shirts will have polyester in them.

Jack Wills stuff looks good if you want to look like a ****, is the rest of that sentence.
I know what you mean! I wouldn't expect a man in his sixties to stroll around with 'JW' over all his clothes, but they do have some very nice quality shirts though.

Middle Aged Mans Clothes....simple...keep it simple
Shoes (with socks), smart straight jeans (no rips, big logos, fancy needlework) plus Polo shirt (no phrases/images or big logos) or long sleeved shirt (tucked in) with nice belt (no big buckles). Add a jumper in Winter.
Basically nothing too tight or too loose, nothing pretentious.

Fortunately, the days have gone when anyone over 35 needed to be worried about wearing decent fashionable clobber and was destined to spend Saturday afternoons being dragged round Mark's and Spencer's with the wife to buy a nice pair of 'slacks'.

Yeah, forgot about Debenham's! The one at the "White Rose Centre".
Enter at ground level, splash on some "smellies", then upstairs for a really good selection for pretty much all age groups.
I, as with aging "Rockers", refuse to dress like a boring old git!
If you want "High Waisters", preferably in beige, to match all your other beige jackets, shirts and knitwear, "Greenwoods" was the place though I think they may have shut shop for not recognising that today,s older men don't want to dress like V!ctor Meldrew.

re these middle-aged men aged mid-60s expecting to live till 130?
If the average life expectancy is around 80, shouldn't middle aged be 40? ___________________
that's a good point - but i think mid life is better for that term.
middle aged is used as one of 3 brackets - working age >65 ,middle aged 65-80 and 80 plus (old aged ?)
it's because the signs of ageing aren't really that apparent until some time after the early 60s ,and a natural deterioration after 80 for most men .
a bit like a wealth scale of 3 stratas ,the rich would only be in the top 5% of the population

As someone else or two has said on here...Monterey at Debenhams excellent choice. White Rose store far better option than the Harrogate branch. Also House of Frasier in Huddersfield very good.

can we back up a few comments? I didn't realize there was a rule about keeping shirts tucked in once you're past 40
Is that right? I don't like to tuck shirts in (outside working hours) cos it accentuates my beer gut

Another stats related comment - an average life expectancy of 80 WOULD BE AT BIRTH, and would take into account infant mortality and early death. Your life expectancy if you reach 60 will way above 80, and possibly as high as or even or higher than 90. These are round numbers of course but you get the point

Any views lads on wearing Farah trousers in your 40's. Tried a pair on the other week and they were really comfy and I like the way the side pockets sit and the slim fit.

You've done a great job Do wah Diddy, fat women don't dress like Hatti Jacques anymore, I've noticed that. Pitty you went to the bookies otherwise you would be a millionaire or even a billionaire. The bookies are spending your money on daft adverts like a bloke with a beard dressed up like a woman. That's a shame.

Barbados is nice but not many shops for my wife. She likes going to the shops on Holiday and they have only got one big shop in the middle of Bridgetown. It's got a good restaurant on the top floor though where you can get proper Barbados food not this American fast food stuff.
