Agree! Hoskins is just amazing. Made or cemented a few careers this film - Pierce Brosnan as 1st Irishman!

I saw Bob on one of the re-runs of Wogan's chat show on BBC yesterday afternoon.
Brian De Palma asked Bob to read for the part of Al Capone in The Untouchables. He said 'I want De Niro, but if he can't do it, will you?' 'Yeh, sure' said Bob. As we know, De Niro got the part. Some time later, Bob got a cheque from De Palma for $200,000. Bob quipped 'I think I'll ask him if he's got any more films he doesn't want me to be in.' ![]() Very convincing accent in TLGF. Bob wasn't even a Londoner, never mind a cockney (his mum was) he was born in Suffolk. Been gone almost a year now. RIP |

Was reading The Last Godfather, The life and times of Arthur Thompsons. (A Glasgow gangster)
Seemingly in the late 50s/early 60s he worked as an enforcer/collector and that's what he did to victims. After one 'nailing' he said to his mate who he'd left waiting in his car "I must be getting soft, I left his wife a claw hammer". |

I've never watched TLGF or any of the Godfather films. They were a bit before my time and I can't imagine they'd age very well. Goodfella's though is one of my favourite gangster films.
I've read one of Arthur Thompson's books, Akabula, what a nasty bloke he was. |

goodfellas doesn't age well either imo, and is at least an hour too long

like the scene in which he kills his best friend in rage with the bottle - shows how a simple glass bottle is lethal. If it was an american film it would have been a knife or gun.
shows that anybody who loses the rag can end up a murderer. the whole film is about actions that spiral out of control. |

I saw it in a cinema in Soho in 1981. Probably the best ending of any film with Hoskins in the back of the car, the music and the change of expressions on his face . Brilliant.
