have both pilots carry a key card that slots into the controls. If the pilot needs to take a leak. he pulls out the keycard leaving the plane on auto pilot till he returns with the card. a backup unlock option could be obtained by contacting a control tower if the pilot was unable to use it for some reason. Or if one of the cards were damaged. like the barcodes at a supermarket. Same sorta system used by the nuclear silo guys in wargames.

Just have one pilot only in each plane.
Seriously, it would halve the number of pilots required in the airline industry, so unsuitable or borderline candidates wouldn't get a job. Fares would be cheaper. It works perfectly well on buses and coaches. You don't see depressed Stagecoach drivers swinging off the A1 and down the cliffs into the North Sea, or London Transport ploughing a double-decker into some big immovable thing in Hackney at 80 mph.

No, but if they were to have some sort of seizure/heart attack type incident, they could make some sort of effort to pull over to the side of the road.

Airline pilot with a seizure switching to auto is safe enough ( heck all the crew are trained in safety so could probably do this, could probably revive the pilot too with some tender loving )

half the problem is that pilots make poor money. they had a tv program a few years ago and they are all paying their student loans off. working two jobs at a time. I think most people think its a well paid job? I know its quite prestigious. I think that looney last week was 70,000 in debt?
