After a while out of the boozers, on my return I noticed that a couple of the local bars have the big early price screen and the barman just rings the bets up for us.

Is this commonplace in UK also? I've only seen it in a couple of local (Irish) boozers.
Pause Switch to Standard View Pubs now have bookie price screens...

There's nowt in it now for the runner anyway. Not like they can pocket the tax now is it?

PS I'm beginning to think it's illegal to take bets from me at all!

@Alias
Bookmakers pay 15% of profits in taxation. An illegal bookie pays nowt.
Easy money taking the £5/£10/£20 bets and laying off anything you think is smart money.

All you need to do is sit in a pub with no bookies in the vicinity and take bets. Give them a price and put the bets on BF at bigger odds. Sit back and hope they win. Guaranteed profit and no financial risk. Wink

akabula, I'm well aware of the GPT of 15%. What I was referring to was the former practice, during the days of General Betting Duty, when a bookmaker could allow a runner to collect the "tax" as his commission., as long of course as the bookmaker was able to um, "suppress" the turnover. Or perhaps "privatise" might be a better term for a tory like you!

Cheers guys, so barring a change in the law this won't be happening in UK any time soon I guess?
