I can never understand why contestants pass.Better to say anything than pass. They don't seem to realise this. Because a wrong answer means the quizmaster gives out the correct answer a pass means the next question is given immediately so say five passes probably equates to one question more being ask over the whole round rather than giving a wrong answer every time. |
By:
I disagree.I think the time difference is minimal, and as we saw last night, passes can cost you the contest.
By:
Plus if you give it a guess then there's a chance you might get it right.
By:
How many times on some quizzes do they ask "In which month?" "Which day of the week?" "Which star sign?" and people still pass without having a guess.
By:
Done loads of TV quizzes though not Mastermind but I think we will have to agree to disagree,
Kembo you are right you could get lucky but remember this is all about time constraints, if you don't know you may pass quicker than thinking of a random answer to give that is likely to be wrong. |
By:
There's pro's and con's for both, I think.
How much have you won doing the quizzes Pumps? |
By:
Just over 7k in total Kenbo

The pressure seemed to get to a lot of them.
I think the winner couldn't believe she had won because she got so few questions right towards the end. |

I disagree. If they have no idea but guess wrongly, the answer is given, which might take 10 seconds extra over the time allotted, enough for maybe 2 more questions in which they'll score 1 point say. If they had guessed at the 5 questions the chances of them getting one right is odds against imo. |
By:
Of course, the whole game is unfair as we know as the number of questions for each contestant can and does vary. 20 question each would be better, but would take some of the fun out of it, maybe.
By:
Are they discouraged from interrupting?
The winner knew the Mr Benn answer after 2 seconds of an 8 second question. |
By:
The questions are ridiculously long. Half of the material inserted into the questions is superfluous. The contestants should also receive the exact same number of questions. Ideally, the General Knowledge questions should also be the same for each contestant, with the contestants hidden away in separate rooms in the building to prevent any leaks, guarded by armed men. I should also be renamed Robert Robinson and given the quizmasters job.
This is how Mastermind should look in future . https://vimeo.com/40394442 |

KennyMann :-"I disagree. If they have no idea but guess wrongly, the answer is given, which might take 10 seconds extra over the time allotted" More like 3 seconds.Time one and see.

Maybe.
Brilliant 2 Ronnie's Mastermind sketch which no doubt you've seen, but well worth another look. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvmRI6K8TS8 |

Add me to the 'never pass' camp, unless the question is 'what is the title of Fiona Apple's second album?'
By:
Most people that "pass" have a 1% chance of getting it right if they guess imo. Split seconds can be vital.
By:
and of course if they guess, they won't answer immediately, they'll pause and think of an answer.
By:
My sentiments exactly, think of an answer, reply, wait for the no & correct answer all takes longer than a simple "pass" in my humble opinion of course.
By:
"have a 1% chance of getting it right"
"they won't answer immediately" Extreme assumptions ! |
By:
Most times thye'll know before the question is completed that they don't know the answer. No need to dwell, just say 'cat' and let JH give the correct answer. If you're passing on seven questions, you're not going to win anyway!
By:
"No need to dwell, just say 'cat' and let JH give the correct answer. If you're passing on seven questions, you're not going to win anyway! " Exactly.
By:
cat = " no " then further reply from question master " its a dog "
question master " what are the two colours of the Indonesian flag" or "Pass " = " what are the two colours of the Indonesian flag " Anyway its a difference of opinion, no way of proving who is right or wrong. |

As a kid I always thought the contestant should guess to keep the number of passes down but then noticed that the quizmaster reads out the correct answer if an incorrect one is given.
I guess the producers would have realised that they needed to cover this angle, otherwise a contestant could answer "Joe Jones" if he had no clue. Having said that, the producers don't always get it right... I haven't listned to 'Just A Minute' for literally decades but when I did, I recall that when someone made an incorrect challenge, the speaker would get an extra point. Surely this is wrong as it penalises all the other contestants. Imo, they should have deducted a point from the challenger. |
By:
Puts me in mind of my school PE teacher.
If penalty shoot-outs went to sudden death in the 5-a-side comp, under his rules, the team that missed first were out regardless of whether they had gone first or second. ![]() |

Just watched on iplayer;
10, 12, 8, 8, 6 & 7. I'll watch the 1st round now. |
By:
Useless 1st round;
1, 1, 2, 1, 0, 1. All guesses apart from Goose Green. |
By:
Is the winner a bit of a mentalist? Not the full ticket imo.
By:
"Not the full ticket" ??? She's an exceptionally "full ticket". I wish I was as full as her !
By:
Suppose it shouldn't really be decided on how many questions you don't know the answer to!
