it is the right decision, given what he did, but it's been handled terribly.

the announcement and the suspension of the shows has meant that the actual issue, drunkenly assaulting a junior member of staff over catering arrangements, has been conflated with all other sorts of entirely unrelated matters.

had the bbc had the sense to tell everyone to keep schtum whilst the investigation was ongoing, they would have avoided all the criticism which has, is, and will be heaped on them.

An internal investigation began last week, led by Ken MacQuarrie, the director of BBC Scotland.
It found that Mr Tymon took himself to hospital after he was subject to an "unprovoked physical and verbal attack".
"During the physical attack Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip. The verbal abuse was sustained over a longer period, both at the time of the physical attack and subsequently."
The verbal abuse "contained the strongest expletives and threats to sack" Mr Tymon, who believed he had lost his job, Mr MacQuarrie noted in his report.
The "physical attack lasted around 30 seconds and was halted by the intervention of a witness," he added.

"During the physical attack Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip." Is he to be arrested for assault ?
Report DStyle March 25, 2015 3:40 PM GMT
Thinking about this, perhaps it's not the right decision.

He's gone, but he's not really. He'll get a very well paid gig somewhere else. Yes, he behaved terribly, but not so badly that he's unemployable. In fact it makes no difference. He'll pop up again, doing exactly the same act, somewhere else, very soon, if that's what he wants.

In the future, he may even appear on the BBC again.

So we must ask, given that his sacking is in no way any form of punishment or discipline, and that the BBC, whether you like it or not, will be financially disadvantaged through sacking him, which ultimately affects all license payers, was it really the right decision
Report brendanuk1 March 25, 2015 3:43 PM GMT

The problems with Top gear started in the early 90s, when some of the multinational car companies decided that they didn’t want any negative comments (fair assessments) about their cars or their service.  So they brought heavy pressure on programs like Top gear and motor magazines.
All they do is threaten them first with legal action and then the threat of never giving the programs and mags any scoops.
So the likes of Top Gear had to look at other ways of keeping their audience happy.

Clarkson was obviously, and rightly, sacked for punching somebody, and nothing else.

Albeit the BBCA reported a 'vicious attack' that required a hospital treatment (for a split lip ffs)

If he was sacked for being 'racist' that would clearly mean that the upstanding and moral BBC would have had to have sacked Diane Abbott years ago.

She would not have appeared for years on Question Time, This Week, Andrew Marr, or any other chat show on any BBC channel.

Unless there is a special reason for not sacking her.

Whatever reason could that be?
