Back in the 60's. Grundig tape player, in the front room, recording singles being played on the radio on a Sunday afternoon. Swearing at the Dj who talked over the intro ! Happy days indeed.

back then in the early 70's records remained in the charts for months
they only used to go up/down 3 or 4 places a week, maximum nothing ever went in straight to number one, nothing ever went straight in to the top 10 |

I have always despised the bulk of the top of the mainstream charts. Aside from the real artists (e.g. David Bowie, Michael Jackson, The Who, The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Motown and the odd soul band/singer ....) I find it very hard to accept that people like those records that make up the bulk of the top of the mainstream charts. (e.g. Boy bands, many x factor winners etc) THEY have managed to carry off one of the greatest conspiracies. I despise radio one for going along with it for all these years rather than letting the DJs play what they want. The fact that some of these "DJs" have also been made famous and wealthy on the back of this absolutely sickens me.

That's because when kids had money to spend they spent it on the bands that appealed to them ie the likes of The Spice Girls and Boyzone.
Neither of these bands and loads of others would have succeeded in the 60s as money was tighter then and very little found it's way down to youngsters. |

Sunday 5 till 7 Tom Brown I think did the charts in late 70's though the chart was actually produced on the Tuesday

back then in the early 70's records remained in the charts for months Consecutive weeks on chart: 1. 69 Happy - Pharell Williams (2013) 2= 63 I Gotta Feeling - Black Eyed Piss (2009) 2= 63 Let It Go - Adele Dazeem (2013) 4= 61 Someone Like You - Just Adele (2011) 4= 61 Rather Be - Clean Bandit (2014) 6= 59 Counting Stars - One Republic (2013) 6= 59 All of Me - John Legend (2014) 8. 57 Wake Me Up - Avicii (2013) 9. 56 Release Me - Engelbert Humerdinck (1967) 10 55 Stranger on the Shore - Acker Bilk (1961) Some right guff in that lot, eh? Only two singles from the '70s managed more than 50 weeks total, let alone consecutive - Judy Collins' Amazing Grace, and Slade, yet again, with the released-umpteen-times Merry Xmas Everybody. |

From this summer,the top 40 countdown will move from Sunday to Friday 4pm to 6pm to coincide with Fridays becoming the new release day for singles.
