Swadlincote was mentioned on the TV this morning which reminded me of its most famous
resident, Heavyweight boxer Jack Bodell  who is still alive at age 74. He has a unique claim
to fame in  that he  is  the only boxer ever  to be featured in  Monty Python when he fought
Sir Kenneth Clark [of Civilisation fame]

The helpful forumite Burton-Brewers has indeed provided us with a good deal of valuable information on this very matter in recent months.

Was Jack managed by George Biddles?

I think it was him.

Biddles often clashed with Simon Smith the sports correspondent on the telly over Jack.
All staged of course.
George said to Simon on one occasion after he'd been criticising his boxer.

''You don't like my boy do you Simon?''

''Oh George don't be silly of course I like him - it's just that.....''

And they'd go on and on like that. Great to watch.

Remember him getting knocked out by the human threshing machine that was Danny McAlinden in the early 70's

Roger - "he can't miss that lantern jaw".  Still good fun after all these years.

Looks like the Villians loved a pitch invasion in those days too

Just watched that tube vid. You forget how brutal the game could be back in those days, that one would've been stopped ten times over if taking place today. A hugely enjoyable five mins.
