Yes a bit boring, ironic that the mental patients in this show were almost boringly normal compared to some of the loons he's done shows on in the past (even if one or two on tonight's programme had done the odd frenzied stabbing now and then to get locked up in the first place).

LT documentaries used to be intelligent, insightful and thought provoking. Now - like this one - they are cheap fodder for the dumbed down masses. Belongs on C5 imo.

When you watch this type of programme you have to wonder if the patient is more intelligent than the professionals(sic) who treat and monitor them - many seem totally disinterested and merely go through the motions for the sake of bureaucracy - the patients seem to have more comprehension of their illness if indeed it is genuine

Basically they have not got a clue. They can offer up a label and limit behaviour with drugs but the problem is when doctors decide the patients are well enough to leave it is on the understanding they keep taking the medication and of course the side effects are so **** 9/10 they stop taking the medication. My dad had severe manic depression and the only treatment that worked was electric shock therapy. It really did work but there isn't a doctor in the world who can explain why.Treatment of mental illness is po faced box ticking.

But what do you suggest? The fundamental problem is their brains are not working correctly and they can't be fixed, isn't it? So what do you do, deny them all chance of a normal life? The most complex object in the known universe, I'm not that surprised no one's got a clue. Intestingly, in the 1960s several studies showed that cutting wheat out of the diet reduced many of the symptoms of psychiatric illness. I wonder how severe many cases would be with a diet designed to not dump loads of glucose in their brains?

I don't have a solution but I have heard enough psychiatrists talking b/s to last me a lifetime.Locking people up is not a solution to mental illness but it may be the only remedy when the patient beat his mother to death for no apparent reason.
