'Cyril Smith would have brought down the Goverment'

Here's a look at Sir Cyril on one of his days off, courtesy of the Newcastle Chronicle. A charming and heartwarming tale of whips, fairy cakes, chocolate eclairs and knee-high socks.

Doubtless the lessons he learned that day were put to good use on those infamous occasions when he would go along to various Boys Homes, unilaterally decide he was their Headmaster, and dispense discipline.

How would he have brought down the government, exactly, given all the sex and spy scandals that didn't bring down governments in the 1960s?

Interfering with kids is on a different level to those sex scandals.
There must have been some pretty important people involved judging by the way it was hushed it up.

he would have said 'x,y and z are pedophiles - and here is the proof' - covering up those other scandals to which you refer would have involved buy-off's all over the place

the buy-off's bought the offenders time, but things usually get out in the end.  Big Cyril was unusually successful - played his cards exactly the same way Jimmy Savile did it.  Those two got away with it completely

poor old jeremy thorpe was a bit unlucky really,with all this other stuff going on he was relatively harmless.

That's the first time I've seen the words "unlucky" and "harmless" appearing in the same sentence as Jeremy Thorpe.

tongue in cheek,alun,but funny how some at the top got their misdemeanours covered up & some didnt.

Did David Steele really say something along the lines of "don't see what the fuss is about, he only spanked a few bare bottoms" or was that just made up?
