Always enjoy the spectacle and athleticism of the crews who train so hard.

Just a bit concerned this year about this...

Both universities have reserve crews.  For the men, Oxford's reserve boat is called Isis, Cambridge's is called Goldie.

Cranks, crackpots and activists don't exactly need a deep issue for an excuse to cause trouble!

What was the Australian nutcase upset by to cause such inconvenience and disappointment to everyone?

Elitism, that's all! It could equally have been for any other misguided protest you could name.

Don't understand why the derision.

Was rowing at the Olympics also classed as a poor sporting event?

The boat race is a wonderful tradition, that is supported by tens of thousands at the event, and watched by millions world wide.
Report akabula March 17, 2015 10:52 AM GMT
Spot on AP. It's a fantastic tradition and, like you, I can't understand the criticism some people level at it.

A crucial element of spectator sport is caring who wins.  I don't care who wins the boat race which makes it proper sh1t.  In fact the only sport I can enjoy watching even though I haven't picked a team is prob rugby, particularly sevens.
Report akabula March 17, 2015 11:08 AM GMT
Not sure many would agree with your first statement.
Numerous events I watch without 'caring' who wins, unless I've had a bet of course.
Real Madrid v Barcelona, Ireland v Wales at the rugby and any of the major golf tournaments readily spring to mind.
Report DStyle March 17, 2015 11:18 AM GMT
don't like it.

first of all the proportion of the crews made up of postgrads takes something away from the spectacle. there's a feeling that there are plenty in each boat who are doing a Masters in Rowing. It would be better if it were undergraduates only.

secondly, rowing is one of the poorest sports there is.  whilst the athletic ability of its participants is of course immense and commendable, it's pretty slow going and often lacks drama.

thirdly, if you were ever to watch it rivserside, be warned that it attracts some of the worst elements of the alumni from both universities.

as a spectacle, i'd take the largely unknown varsity boxing match any day of the week.

I think you need to have some kind of emotional investment in it, which I guess rules out the majority of us. Plus after speedway it's probably the sporting event when the result is pretty much known after the first few minutes. Even Formula 1 has a few overtakes every so often.

It'll never happen but coverage of the Henley Regatta would do wonders for Rowing. Two boats, mano-a-mano, over just over 2k down the Thames, with a race going off every five minutes in the heats, featuring some of the best oarsmen in the world. There's some sport for you!

PS If you want to watch some real competitive Rowing from the Thames towpath, get yourself down to the Head of The River race, rowed from Mortlake to Putney, with upwards of 350 crews going off in a time trial event. Much more engaging.
Report Crisp77 March 17, 2015 11:31 AM GMT
If I want to watch rowing I put on Jeremy Kyle.
Report Danno March 17, 2015 12:10 PM GMT
Love the fact that Britain still has these sporting traditions, and this is a genuine sporting contest where you can't con, cheat or fluke your way to victory.
However, all that tradition has been undermined by the practice of bringing in overseas post-grads (who are as close as you can get to professional rowers) on mickey mouse degrees, in combination with the ludicrous OTT advertising and sponsorship of some city based investment bank.  Like most sports, money has ruined what used to be an event for the public's entertainment.

I live a short stroll from the finish at Chiswick bridge, but if at all, I'll probably watch it on the telly with a wager on the winning time or distance.

Not yesterday you didn't. Laugh

Google 'lost' Chiswick Bridge, and drivers (who must be as thick as two planks) were re-routed to cross the Thames.

'Oh dear, sat-nav says the bridge isn't there, I'll drive to the next bridge.'

Would be greatly improved with supporters of each team having powerful water canon every few hundred yards along the river bank.

Say Oxford on north bank, Cambridge on the south.  Or maybe alternating team stations on each bank.  Would make it much more tactical as crews could 'shelter' behind their opponents.

Maybe could try and get Stuart Hall to commentate.   Unless he is in jail, of course.

Large bags of flower positioned at various points on the bridges that can be avoided by going under the right bit ,Water cannon
a good idea ,release a few killer sharks in to the river, boats being overturned and crews being eaten would certainly get the viewing figures up ,perhaps a few unstable world war 2 mines along the river would also make for interesting viewing ,failing any of the above it is a complete load of boring shyte that is usually a one horse race after a couple of hundred meters ...
