Cheapest way to listen to talking books? Help please.

Having purchased about a hundred talking books for an elderly relative, I, too, began to balk at twenty quid a pop.  Fortunately, I have found a solution and would be glad to share the secret.

I have my doubts about its legality, so have sent you a private message.

Nice one Poker, thanks for the heads up I have acted on your advice.  In the meantime I have worked out that with that audible website all I have to do is "return" the book I have just listened to then I get another token with which I can borrow another.  So I have returned "I, Partridge" and am now listening to "Travels with Charley" by Steinbeck.  I am just one week into the month's free trial.  After that it is £8 a month with presumably unlimited books using this token system as far as I can gather.  Will perhaps pay for a mo th then reappraise the situation.

When I lived in Essex, they charged, I think about £1.50 for a 3 week loan of tapes or CDs. In Liverpool it was free, in the W.

there are all types of talking books and you can order what isn't in.
There are all sorts of free download facilities too.

Have a look on Youtube and BBC I player Radio Drama.

I listened to The God Father on YouTube.  Took about 2 months because I tend to fall asleep listening to talking books.

Yeah I managed to get Travels with Charley in the end but fell asleep within about 10 minutes.   Got a couple of good PG Wodehouse ones on youtube but you defo can't just get anything on there - more you get what you're given.

I'm not right keen on the guy reading this Steinbeck book, makes a massive difference who the reader is.  This yank guy doesn't quite sound "gruff" enough for me.   Alan P as, obviously, Alan P was brilliant.  JOhnathan Cecil read the Psmith books and was perfect.
