Probably not a bad thing. It needs a humiliating loss before anyone in charge sits up and takes on the drastic changes that are clearly required. A stumble into the QF's and it would just continue to be the same old tripe.
It took Germany getting knocked out of the group stages Euro 2000 before they realised a total overhaul of their club & national football structure. Now they are world champions, with their top clubs winning Champions Leagues. Took some time, but the fruits of those investments have justified the process. With England, in cricket, football and rugby, it tends to be same old, same old... |

It took Germany getting knocked out of the group stages Euro 2000 before they realised a total overhaul of their club & national football structure. Now they are world champions, with their top clubs winning Champions Leagues. Took some time, but the fruits of those investments have justified the process. Germany won the Euros in 1996, Dortmund the Champs League in '97 and Bayern came within two minutes of doing the same in '99, so German football wan't exactly in the doldrums. Whatever overhaul they underwent, they didn't need to wait long for the fruits - Bayern were European champions in 2001, the national team reached the World Cup Final in 2002, Leverkusen the Champs league in the same year. |

Mark Ramprakash batting coach? This guy got more stick about slow play than Boycott and Tavaré put together. It's not all his fault of course, the seed had been sewn for a very long time, however, one-day batting is not all about forward defence (unless yer Engerlish) Whoever appointed him should fall on their sword before the sun sets..
I would like to see him coaching marbles. |

yep the one thing that struck me about ramprakash's international career is that scoring runs always seemed a bit of an afterthought. hardly surprising batsmen under his guidance hardly play a shot in anger

England cannot afford to "retire" cricketers as good as Kevin Pietersen, not least when so many other supposedly 'divisive' characters have been given a free pass over the years. I've been watching England for more years than I care to recall, and Pietersen is the finest batsman I can personally recall wearing the Three Lions.
