You don't need to spend £50 quid a month.

My phone cost less than £100 to buy (Moto g - cracking phone for the money) and my PAYG sim is £6 a month for 250 minutes, unlimited texts and web.

Even if you only give the phone a 2 year life that works out at a tenner a month,

Virgin (works on EE network and I think also Orange? I get good coverage anyway)- I get other Virgin services so I think I get a discount for that.

Sorry - I just realised its 150 minutes (not 250)Blush

Its a VM10 tarriff which normally costs £10 and they give me a £4 credit every month.

I phoned up a while ago to get my daughter the same deal and they wouldn't give it to me straight away but the guy put her on the VM7 deal and advised me to phone back after 3 months to ask for the better deal, Which I did and they gave it to me. (Their sim only contracts are rolling monthly anyway so if it doesn't work out you can just cancel).

One piece of advice is if you call them up, follow the instructions to the "If you are thinking of leaving us" section as they are the ones who can give the better deals and are nearly always in a UK call-centre.

Gin, Despite my comment I have the same phone on Virgin and pay £12 per month tariff. Fine for email, browsing and apps but the camera is not great. I have an ipad so do not see the point of paying £50 per month for an iphone.

I thought it was so Africans/Asians/Eastern Europeans could sit on public transport and speak very loudly into them.

It's not just about calls. They can track the phone's movements, which means they can track your (and almost everyone else's movements). Coming soon: speeding fines based on mobile phone tracking. They can know your social networks -- not just who you call but who you meet. If Mr Putin wants to know who was at the opposition rally, he can ask the phone company. If Mr Cameron wants to know who went to Mr Farage's rally, well, you get the picture.
