The races are a lot more competitive it seems so a good reason to watch.

Formula E is very good for Eczema.

any other 4 wheel racing series. Of which there are about 17billion

So why is F1 more popular than the rest of the 17 billion types of 4 wheel motor sports most of which seem to have a lot more going on in them than F1?

Probably because Formula One is seen as the apex of open-wheel car racing. It is the class that drivers, designers, team managers and mechanics aspire to.
On the basis of simple numbers of spectators, F1 is not anywhere near the most popular class of motor racing.
However, it has global appeal with fans all over the world which means that it is broadcast to a huge audience. Lesser classes, and types of racing, usually generate less international interest.

Just out of interest which is the most popular class of motor racing and do you think Formula E will become popular?

Autograss is the biggest as far as amateur participation is concerned, there are a hell of a lot of people watching rallying and NASCAR but as to it being bigger than F1 I don't know. BTCC was well supported 10 years ago but I think it's dropped off.

I, along with about 80,000 other Brits in between The Epsom Derby and Royal Ascot, each year, travel down to Le Sarthe in France and spend an amazing week at The Le Mans 24 Hours. This has to be the most under rated, but best value world class motor sporting event on this planet. It amazes me how little national press coverage we have concerning this event. To those motor sport fans that have never been, I couldn't recommend it enough.

If you mean 'popular' as in most people actually going to watch, I would guess that would be the one with the highest number of events staged. Formula Ford or Formula Renault. Participation-wise it might well be Rallycross or saloon cars. It's not something that I've ever thought about.
As for Formula E...I can see several reasons why it should do well. Electric powered/hybrid vehicles is a rapidly expanding market and the developments done on the track can only be beneficial.
Another big advantage that Formula E has is the very low noise level. Most motor sports fall foul of noise level limits. This is not the case with electric power and so, more 'city circuits' should be possible without the problems of actually getting to the venue.

The top F1 teams are spending £300million+ a year. Plus you have all the history. Even people who have no real interest will know about Monaco

It's the pinnacle of open wheel racing.

I think le man gets pretty good coverage. It has full live coverage on eurosport and it breaks into the mainstream media in the week of the race.

I think they should have Sinclair C5 racing, I would watch that
