I can only hear McGuinn's bass and the drums on those records these days, but I'll always have those harmonies playing in my memory. A mono version of The Byrds' Original Singles 1965-1967 might be the best vinyl record I ever bought.

Yes. Up until a couple of years ago I could still use the guitar to sing and play songs which had mostly vanished for me on record (the vocals, guitars and brass all get mixed way too far back to be audible for me after about the year 2000). But now all the notes on the top two strings of the guitar have gone too, so I still bash away, but god knows what the people next door must think.

A song called Tree by Sebadoh is precious to me, as it was one of the very last new songs of which I could hear enough to appreciate it, and last year it became definitely the very last song for which I'll be able to work out the chords (can't find them anywhere online). My mate Eddie off Racing UK came to visit in the autumn, and he and his girlfriend reckoned it sounded right (at least I think that's what they said - female voices have now disappeared totally, and male voices are mostly just a noise).

The Byrds' songs are good, as I can adapt my memories of those harmonies to my tinnitus to make it tolerable.
