oflog? as opposed to log off

In rural France, the local log sellers quote a unit called a "Stere" which is an old term for a cubic metre. This is pretty standard so your "cubic metre" man is playing by the book.

By:
You're a mine of information Foinavon. Allons enfants, let's follow the French model and kick the dodgy log sellers into the woods.

Here you go Bongo.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stere#mediaviewer/File:Raummeter_hg.jpg It should be stacked in metre lengths on the trailer so it's easy to verify quantity before offloading. |

Getting the size right seems to be the burning issue
By:
That's an inflammatory statement.
By:
We seem to have reached a cord on this issue.
(128 cubic feet, i.e. 8ft x 4ft x 4ft - a much more civilized way of stacking and measuring firewood) |

I pay £45 for one of those big builders dump bags delivered, and it's really good stuff, seasoned and 3 years old etc.

I have had wood burners since 1987 and have never yet bought any wood.
All you need is a dog to walk twice a day and no sense of embarrassment in front of the neighbours at dragging half a dead poplar tree out of the river and carrying it home over your shoulder. Plus a large bow saw and, of course, the biggest chopper you can handle. A greenhouse is handy for seasoning recently fallen branches after you've split them. Always save all the twigs, offcuts and sawdust in strong binliners - they makes much better kindling than bits of plywood, as they build a proper bed. |

I left such a big log in toilet yesterday I could have sold it to medical science

Where from, HH?
By:
a bloke who lives not far from Sandwich in Kent Ken
By:
Thanks for that, I'll give him a call.

I have never seen anyone advertise logs who doesn't say they have been seasoned for 2 years!
Some sneak some softwood in. Those steres are fine if you have a 1m wide stove. Didn't know there was VAT on logs! |
By:
I always test them with a moisture meter, they will tell you anything these days, seasoned my ~*#%.
By:
What sort of percentages are we looking for for green, seasoned etc.?
By:
@ screaming - Im in the same boat as you mate, not unusual to find me dragging home half a dead tree after a dog walk lol

Tremendous name Log Sellers. What happened to bloke/farmer who sold firewood ? 40 euros a cubic metre here in Holland.
By:
Gas is a lot less hassle.....a nice Mr Putin pumps it all the way from Siberia at reasonable rates.
By:
Does Mr P sell it by cubic metre or by the volume of a jack boot.

I think you will find that Vlad prefers a Gucci Loafer.

if we ever need a unit of relaxation, that is an excellent choice |
By:
I think you will find that Putin prefers platform heels.
By:
Nice knowing you, sfbtw.
For the record, I think Mr Putin is a real man's man, and could easily beat off a bear. |
By:
As Sharon Osbourne comments in that advert when it appears on Russia Today: "Oh, Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin! You're so Money Supermarket!"
By:
I've learnt a lot from this thread. Amongst other things, sfbtw has the biggest chopper you can find.
And that it's somehow acceptable to put salt and pepper on a log. |

Eerie!

Do you think it was deliberate to use a Putin lookalike?
