Atm it is always pointless stuff like crochet and learn to speak french, what right minded bloke wants to do that ffs? Blokes in their twenties and thirties are notorious for not engaging in the adult learning game so how about making it more accessible, more current ffs. a few potential courses are..
. How to do a few cool gymnastics stuff like a backflip or a very basic tumble just for when you score a goal or try or take a good catch etc
. Basic impressions, or at least perfecting the simple ones eg. Murray Walker, robert De Niro. I think a few good Im pressions can get you a long way, look at Dirtman. Very serious here, would love to do better impression.
. Basic pub fighting skills. No one wants to spend three months doing karate when at the end of it all you can do is put one foot forward assertively and shout ""Hei" the kind of stuff that will actually win a fight in a pub car park against someone who is half P1ssed as indeed you will be is what we need.
A ten week basic course in DIY. But not too in-depth about any one subject.
For example, electrics. Most blokes don't need, or want to get the 17th Edition or whatever it is, just devote one evening of the course to re-wiring a plug, re-wiring a house, replacing the main consumer unit etc.
For gas heating, I am sure they could give a decent grounding in installing simple gas appliances such as hobs and gas fires and servicing a boiler. Pretty sure they could include installing a wet central heating system and installing and commissioning a gas boiler in the same evening.

You have gone down the serious and practical route there Hacksaw, fair play, I respect that. My examples are only half joking insomuch as there are courses where, to a point, you could learn the skills I mention but the w@nker who does the course will spend three months going through all the theory and stuff before letting you have a go at Anything fun or useful. Any martial art is a fine example of this. As Jack Dee once said, I would rather get beaten up.

I did just want to illustrate that in the rush for meaningless qualifications and pieces of paper, the days of the have-a-go hero have all but disappeared. All down to this ridiculous health and safety. My dad was a great example of the old-style DIY. Nothing fazed him. Pretty sure he managed to by-pass the electricity meter in some way that gave the house free electricity. And he had no formal electrical qualifications. In fact, he had no qualifications at all.
Maybe my suggestions were a bit too practical.I did just want to illustrate that in the rush for meaningless qualifications and pieces of paper, the days of the have-a-go hero have all but disappeared. All down to this ridiculous health and safety.
How long would it take from entering a boxing gym to actually getting in a ring and punching someone in the face? I reckon the very first lesson in a gym should be you, the novice, against the best boxer in the gym. Just to see if you can hit him, how long you can last when going windmilling in all the time and to see if you can take a punch, though the opponent, being well good and all, could of course be economical with his punches. I mean everyone has a plan until they get punched in the face.

My dad could have given lessons at DIY college. As far as electrics go, my dad's module would probably have been titled Bacofoil - The Fuse Mender's Friend. Then there'd be: How Matches are just as good as Rawlplugs, Screws - Why a mixture of crosshead and slotted of varying sizes is best for any one job and last but least Lawnmowing - Week 2 - How to assemble a mower leaving out as many parts as possible so that it won't start at all.

You'll remember that quite some time ago you started a "things you used to believe which turned out not to be true" thread, to which I mad a contribution concerning Philistines.
This week I heard a much better (or worse) one - someone posted on a messageboard that for many years he thought The Empire State Building was called The Ten Past Eight Building.
Good afternoon rob.I hope you don't mind my going off-topic . . . You'll remember that quite some time ago you started a "things you used to believe which turned out not to be true" thread, to which I mad a contribution concerning Philistines. This we
