Cho was subject of a December 2014 news report that she ordered a Korean Air Lines plane to return to the gate to force the chief flight attendant off the plane because a packet of macadamia nuts was served to her in a bag rather than on a plate. The flight attendant was forced to kneel down in front of her and beg for forgiveness, and was immediately fired. The cabin crew couldn't satisfy Cho, and Cho ordered the manager off the plane, which necessitated it taxiing back to the airport, creating a delay of approximately 20 minutes for the 250 people on-board, and sparking a wider controversy.
When the incident became public there was a popular backlash against Cho and Korean Air. Korean Air responded to the anger by forcing Cho to resign her job as vice-president. Criminal charges were brought against her. Korean Air is expected to be fined around USD $2 million. On December 30, 2014, Cho was arrested for disrupting the flight schedule, assaulting two flight attendants, coercing them and disturbing their work. In February 2015 she was sentenced to one year's imprisonment without probation over the incident. |
