….. Ian Curtis… before his suicide.
I saw it on BBC2 as well on that fatal 1980 night, and quite honestly it wasn't that bad. Rather enjoyed it if truth be told.
A few weeks later this timeless album saw the light of day, and for my money here's the best thing he/they ever did.

How did anyone know that he'd actually watched it? Just because the TV was tuned to the channel, I suppose. Might have been watching Newsnight, then Open University came on and he realized there was nothing else to watch, so he thought he might as well end it all.

It finished late on a Saturday night as I recall. Presumably the telly was still on and the post mortem was able to roughly able to calculate the time of death? Or maybe he told someone he was going to watch it.
Either that, or quite possibly some rubbish journalist tried to romanticise the death, given that everything else to do with Curtis has been absurdly romanticised. |

Well, I've just read the relevant passage in his wife's biography and it seems he'd announced he was going to spend Saturday night at the marital home because he knew his wife would be out, and he thought the film would upset his dad if he watched it at his parents' place.
So apologies to Peter Snow and the Newsnight team, who clearly played no part in Curtis's death. |

Not really a spoiler and possibly in bad taste,
but the dancing chicken at the end, dances a bit like Ian Curtis Good film, but not one of Herzog's best, but that's because I enjoy that nutjob Kinski |

If you have a vinyl copy of the Still LP, you'll see THE CHICKEN WON'T STOP inscribed into the run-off groove of side 1; some chicken tracks in the grooves of sides 2 and 3; and THE CHICKEN STOPS HERE in the run-off of side 4.
The odd thing is that Curtis's dead-fly-standing-up dance does look comical when you see videos of him now, but at the time, performing live, it was nothing of the sort. Like the music of the band live it was violent and unforgettably intense. Curtis was a very big and powerfully built bloke. No way could you laugh at or ignore his presence. It's unfortunate that the film Control cast that fey little drip to play him as a sensitive, poetic soul. That wasn't the effect he had on audiences at the time. |
