any enthusiasts on here ?
do you need more than 1 detector ?
i see quite a few accessories are worth having too ?
dont look a cheap hobby if your thinking about being serious with it ?
im guessing between £500 and a £1000 to start up ?

a friend of mine used to do it by the Trent, 99.9% of the stuff he found was fishing weights. He did find a silver pocket watch once but it was only fit for scrap. Good exercise though as you tend not to notice how many miles you've walked.
Ive got a Garrett Groundhog.
make sure you put a scuff pad on it and lightly brush the ground,not aimlesly swing it back and forth.

Although I consider it a "geeky hobby" I'd imagine it's quite good fun to do.
I can see a similarity to fishing in some way, I always use to say "one more cast" to myself, and I'd still be there an hour later. With MD it'd be one more dig and I'll call it a day.

Once found what I thought was the end of a screw off gold coloured bottle top,the bit thats left on the neck of a bottle.was full of mud,but it was a 3 banded gold ring.worth loads.
The thing is.you can go back to an old sight many times.the worms turn all the ground over.you find things in the same place that you never did before.
Also you can go on a beach that has plenty of soft sand,especially after stormy/windy conditions.Sometimes you find coins just laying there.

there used to be loads of them on Weymouth beach at 6 in the morning
Something I'd like to try but don't think I would make a hobby out of it.

Get a cheap MD for about 50 quid to start with. Spend proper money later on.
Be careful where you go - ask permission from landowners, etc.
If you're looking for cash, go round where the ice cream van was on the beach.

funny but true, not into myself but have a few friends into it. You need permission. Even finding something on a beach needs permission.
