Jason Roberts was there first.  I find it highly ironic that he bleats about racism whilst failing to recognise this is the only reason he gets the punditry work he does.

I have some sympathy with some of Ralf Littles views.  Depression is no excuse for drink driving or self destructive behaviour when those closest suffer.

Very hard to comment unless you feel the sense of helplessness that people with suicidal tendencies must have.

However, glad to read Little's comments.  Good to get another side to subjects which become taboo and all you usually get is the liberal panderings.

Here is Little's full statement.

"First and foremost, and I should know this by now, twitter is not the place for this sort of thing, as it takes more than 140 characters to talk about anything seriously. So already I wish I hadn’t said anything, not because I regret the comment, but because the choice of forum was wrong and frankly understandable if people are riled up.

"Next thing is, I don’t suddenly want to air a list of grievances that sound sensationalist and do some tabloid’s job for them. Clarke and I have history, that involves money, lies, on one notable occasion me being interrogated by the police over something I knew nothing about… and all sorts of other stuff.

"Now, when it comes to mental illness, I understand it, I’ve lived around it, I’ve supported it, I fight against the stigmatization of it and so on. I think it’s a very real issue with a long road to go to combat it.

"So that said, on to this case… It’s extremely difficult to watch someone repeatedly ruin other people’s lives, then explain it in such a way that makes them immune to criticism. And it keeps happening. It’s now reached a point where, as this proves, it’s like emotional touch paper.

"And sure, I’m not a professional expert on mental health, and no doubt, neither are you. But I know more about this particular case than you do just because you read about it in the Sun, or saw a documentary.

"There comes a point where it’s just frustrating to witness someone constantly hammering the pattern of destruction for those around – and I was once one of those around - only to see the destructive force make a moving and sincere apology… then do it again.

(On reflection, that’s the nature of addiction/illness, and I know that all too well, but as I say, a rash tweet and it’s not the place for it. )

"I should also say that during the course of this twitter… whatever it is, Clarke has been in touch with a retrospective apology over things that went on a long time ago, and I think that has to be respected by all, myself included.

"Anyway... You have to be in a dark place to attempt suicide, and only a fool would suggest otherwise. However, I do find myself thinking that when you’ve been driving drunk five (is it?) times, risking lives of countless other people, and even in your darkest hour still manage to involve a lorry driver who could have died himself, and now has to live with that trauma and memory every day fro the REST of his life… Personally my stores of empathy start to dry up after a while.

"Am I really that out of order for suggesting that’s not on? Do we repeatedly overlook reckless destruction of other lives because someone apologizes, again and again, and says it’s an illness? Isn't there a point where we can go, "enough is enough"?

"I hate drink driving, I really do. I know victims of it, who have died, been paralysed, or lost loved ones, and I’ve watched this man get caught doing it several times then publicly forgiven, lauded, and handed a bloody good career! I’m sorry but that annoys me!

"And I think that’s my overriding feeling. I don’t feel sad for Clarke any more, I was drained of that some time ago. Instead I feel sad, and maybe a little angry, for Gemma, and the kids, and the lorry driver, and the people who dived out of the way of the car all those years ago, and all the other people who have been f****d over and over and over… you know who you are.

Damage limitation from Clarke by the look of things but why the fook involve an innocent lorry driver. Sound a right selfish tw@t to me.
But depends whose story you wanna believe

Probably both. Some people do really stupid and selfish things and then are genuinely contrite afterwards but they keep engaging in the self destructive behaviour which ripples out to others and eventually some friends and family stop forgiving them and cut them loose and others stick around trying to help becoming more and more exhausted.

It is quite a saddening story. I've always been a football fan but I must admit I'd never heard of Clarke Carlisle until five years ago. It's been pretty well documented that he's a footballer with a brain in his head compared to some of them.

I know a lad who was a trainee at Notts County a couple of years ago, and the manager/coaches were chucking bananas at some of the black lads and being genuinely disgusting towards them. The lads didn't know whether to speak up about what was going on (and possibly ruin any chance they had of signing a pro contract) or turn a blind eye because it wasn't directed at the majority of them. Anyway it all came out in the open and the FA conducted their own investigation into it. Clarke was the man who did most of this, phoning up the lads and visiting them at their homes.

Depression like many mental health problems are intrinsically about the self. It's not a value judgement it's a statement of fact. The inability to project outside ones own sphere and take into account others feelings is an integral aspect of depression.

No, that's half the issue with Carlisle. He, and others, think he has more of a brain in his head than he really has. You only need listen to his pundit work to see he is a bluffer. Hence, while I have every sympathy with depression, I suspect many of his issues come from how he has recently been 'found out' about his lack of grey matter and he isn't being hero-worshiped and listened to any longer.

Aside from his lack of punditry skills, I've have sometimes heard him spout nonsense about wider matters than football.

To me he seems like a bit of a self-obsessed, 'look at me' character but, despite this, I still hopes he sorts himself out.

Nobody asked the question, why was this originally reported as a crash by the media, only now revealed he walked into the road and as you say traumatised an innocent lorry driver in the process. Hopefully he sues for the physical and emotional distress.

I've seen people with severe depression sit for weeks and in extreme circumstances months doing nothing and having to be washed dressed and even turned in bed to stop them developing pressure sores. Cod diagnosis but I'd say he may have some obsessive compulsive type personality disorder.
By:

On his commentary I think he suffers the same delusions as Garth Crooks. He's clearly reasonably intelligent but he seems to want to present an image of himself as being more cerebral than he is and it doesn't come across well because it is forced.

Fact is, if the guy has been done for drink-driving five or six times, he is a recidivist criminal and should have been jailed more than once, depression or not.

Racingqueen if you had it would know the difference. I really hope you or any of your friends or family ever suffer from it because unlike other inllness's you can't see it. So before you actually make statements like you have read about it. I will tell you its a horrible illness.
By:

Your mental health is as important if not more than your physical health. And yes depression exists. Weather people use it as an excuse of other things i don't know. But people who have genuine depression suffer and it really is a terrible illness. I bet most people will know someone who has suffered with it and their are alot of people more than reported lost to it every year. So before making such ingnorant statements maybe do some research on it. This has nothing to do with Clark Carlisle but depression in general.

Do you believe that Jesus Christ was a real person born of a virgin?

It's just that this fence-sitting view that you can't establish either way if there exist people who use depression as an excuse is one common in the Union's most religious communities.

one of those who clearly has a self destruct button and cant control it.(getting into a car when drunk)

when reality hits home he then hits the depressive state.
