http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2930818/Anger-BBC-Churchill-documentary-docker-s-claim-operators-paid-lower-cranes.html

It is one of the most poignant moments of modern British history – the dipping of cranes in silent tribute as Winston Churchill’s coffin passes down the Thames.
But there was shock last night after a former docker cast doubt on the spontaneity of the occasion by claiming the workers had to be paid.
John Lynch, a dock man in 1965, made the claim in Jeremy Paxman’s BBC1 documentary, Churchill: The Nation’s Farewell.

He said: ‘They [the dockers] didn’t like Churchill. I think I can speak for most, they didn’t like him. When they were asked to do it the atmosphere was “no”. They were paid to do it. We didn’t work Saturday afternoon, we wouldn’t have been there.
‘There was a lot of arguments and rows about it. The atmosphere was that Churchill wasn’t a working class person. You’d see him with a cigar in one hand and sometimes a drink in the other, he just didn’t associate with us at all.’

To be fair Churchill was always a pretty right wing Tory.

His reputation rests on his inspirational leadership through the second World war, for which we must
always be grateful.

Outside of the second World war never greatly liked by the working classes

Without Churchill I am not sure we would even have stayed in the war. Many wanted to do a deal with Hitler
once France fell.

I am not entirely sure it did this country any good, it bankrupted us.

Still it may well have been decided factor in World War II, us holding out, so at least we ensured the end of Nazism,
although it seems to me we did not win anything. We never recovered.

Without us holding out. Where would the USA have been able to invade Europe from? They could not do it from the USA.

Without our bombers aided, later by US bombers, Germany would have had more resources to devote to the Russian front,
it may have given them victory, who knows?

Looking at out country now Money Tree I am doubtful, but you are probably right Money Tree

So you think we'd have been better off doing a deal.
Hitler leaves us free whilst sucking up the rest of Europe.
Peace in our times whilst the Germans regroup and replenish?
Then Hitler looks at the UK and thinks 'why not?'.
Of course it did this country good, anything else doesn't bear thinking about.

It is all what if, is it not

Your what if seems most likely akabula, but Churchill had to fight to keep us in the war

But what if's one can never be certain of anything. There is a case there.

Still it never happened,

It may well have been DO Wah.
All we have against this is the word of an old docker who might have said no whilst others said yes.

I think he did akabula

But you must realise how weak we were after France fell, our army had been thrashed, we got the troops off at Dunkirk
but had to leave the equipment behind.

I think it was only our air force saved us, If Hitler had destroyed that I think he would have risked crossing the channel.
His army lands, and he could support it, we were toast.

The interview withe the 'Docker' ruined an otherwise interesting appraisal of the Churchill funeral.

Just why that sh!te had to be included - and especially at the end of the programme - I do not know,

The 'Docker'looked remarkably YOUNG for somebody from 50 years ...
- and just how do we know that he was telling the TRUTH

"Dockers do did not work Saturday afternoons," said it ALL for me.

I agree with @onlooker. It should have been left on the cutting room floor. Even if true, I'm not sure about the spin put on it. I dare say the soldiers carrying the coffin still got paid, along with the archbishop and everyone else. Why call it a bribe?

There was a historian on Newsnight last night who said that Churchill delayed the D-Day landings by about a year which may have resulted in 10 million more deaths as it prolonged the war.

Yes some of Churchill's decisions during WWII have come in for criticism.

The USA wanted to invade France in mid 1943 and not Italy, Churchill's decision.
But then we will never know what happened if we did, we may have failed for all we know.

I still think we owe a great debt of thanks for leading us through WWII.
Historians always argue over the past, one can see both sides of the argument on this one.
By:

The USA even wanted us to invade France in 1942. I cannot see that would have succeeded.
1943 more arguable.
